Type 1 is caused by a chronic insufficiency or absence of insulin, resulting in dangerously elevated blood sugars.
Type 2 is usually a result of insulin resistance and is often accompanied by an over-production of insulin at first. Blood sugars become elevated because the insulin produced is made ineffective by the body's resistance to its effects.
