@Guzzler the older I get the bolder I get with decor. I like colour in my life. In the house. In the garden. All my clothes. It cheers me up, and if I were forced to be in one room for a period of time, the colour would make me smile. Go on ..... be brave.

Edit to add ..... and I'm older than you are.
 
On the other hand, if having lived in a gaudy Spanish brothel for years I can imagine how it may be time for something different...

Oh definitely I imagine it would, but never having been in a gaudy Spanish brothel I can't say one way or the other

I retired in the year 2000 and have never once looked back. I do feel for those with years and years ahead of having to work. I remember the feeling well. Sunday nights were just as stressful, worrying about the following day. Nightmare.
 
I have never been in a gaudy Spanish brothel, or a "drab, simple, modest or tasteful" Spanish brothel either.

I have however been wondering what an XL son is (if it's not rude to ask, what is one?) . As well as the stripes in the KittenCat's beach towel (in avatar pic), my little living room also has a touch of fuchsia and a touch of bright scarlet. None of it planned except the fuchsia footstool and I kinda like it as such a color scheme is not something I've ever planned before.
 

Sorry, by XLson I refer to Extra Large son (of which I have three). I am not short but they tower over me.
By the time each one reached about 12 or 13 yrs old I used to say 'Sit down while I am chastising you!' But the real reason was because if they were sitting I acheived better leverage with my smacks.
 
My true introduction to the world of interior decorating (of rooms, not the body) was via my mother -in-law.
She are very particular about choosing the colours of walls etc in and outside her new house. This is about 18years ago.
I think that accounting for both inside and outside colours there were 110 sample colours tried out.
One side of pieces of cardboard about 80 by 80 cm were first coated with a primer/undercoat and then 2 coats of the sample paint and placed in various positions within a room or on outside wall so that the colour could be judged in all matter of lighting and positions. Muggins here was the 'volunteer artist/painter'.
The ceilings were already painted a flat soft-white colour although I have been in houses where the ceilings were a pink colour, supposedly to give people's faces a rosier appearance.
My mother-in-law was also definite about lighting, none of these cool-white light globes which she said made people look like they were in a morgue. Warm colour lighting only.
The end result: The colours that appealed most were ones that reminded one of food in some way, or elicited a gustatory (taste) and./or olfactory (aroma) response or memory.
Although, not saying that the walls had to be an avocado green or lemon squash yellow.
The colours were more subtle and thus less likely for people to tire of them: peaches/apricots, yellow creams, tantalising cool oranges. And the outside: reminiscent of the American brownstone tradition. Guess what the neighbours called the house:
The chocolate house !!
Several years ago my wife and I wished to repaint the main bedroom. But the duvet cover ,a grey-green silk number, was to be part of the colour scheme as well as some wood features, with an easterly aspect and a preference for darkish colour carpet.
We employed the services of an interior decorator who came up with a colour scheme which we had not envisaged. I think one thinks of past colour schemes and tried to 'fit or squeeze' them into the new room and cannot make things work.
An independent opinion saves lots of later grief and regret.
Result: a dark black-grey carpet, brightish lemony skirting board, doors and architraves, a deep yellow gold on the wall, slightly coolish flat white ceiling and a feature wall of rushgreen. Of course the fact that Aussie sporting colours are yellow and green had nothing to do with it. The colours have 'food-appeal' without making one wish to raid the fridge.
Colours are so personal but please consider the 'food connection"!!

Morning all

Loving all the talk about decor. We painted our newly restored kitchen with expensive paint that was meant to be a soft grey but it looks lilac, I'm not happy with it but Alan likes it so I'm stuck with it for now (and I refuse to pay out for more expensive paint )

We will be doing the hall, stairs and landing soon and I fancy using some of this wallpaper on a couple of walls

Don't know if Alan agrees cos I haven't told him yet

Sorry to butt in ,but I have a question about squash .A friend has given me a slice so I looked it up to check the carbs but I have no idea what sort of squash it is ,not butternut and I am utterly confused about the carbs content .I am having problems with my BGs at the moment I think I may have an infection I have been for a chest x-ray but not got result yet (a story for another time !)
so if anyone can help with the carbs in squash for my soup I would be very grateful

I just read over my post and I feel I should explain my "simple, drab, etc." description. I looked up the opposites of "gaudy" and those were the ones listed. I certainly didn't mean them as a comment on what sounds like a lovely new color scheme you have planned for your room! I'm sorry if it came across that way.

Actually when I first saw "gaudy" in the thread I thought about "gaudy" as in "joy" -- as in Gaudy Night, and what the speaker at our recent Advent class said about "Gaude" -- "rejoice."

I love your "sit down while I am chastising you!" comment. I used to date a guy 15" taller than me. His mother was 5'2" to his 6'5" and I can just imagine her telling him the same thing!
 
Got the phone call from the internist, and as of 10 minutes ago I'm officially T1.

There's still no clear evidence one way or the other but she thought it much more likely it's T1 and she was happy to diagnose me with the information we have.
We talked over changing to the hospital or staying with my GP practice nurse (who I very much like but who doesn't really have much of a clue) and she was fine with either choice, even though T1's as a rule are treated in the hospital. She was also fine with me seeing her only once a year with an optional nurse visit halfway the year, so I elected to change to her.
True to her word, she'll expect me in about 6 months time, as my last visit with practice nurse and blood tests were 6 months ago.

I think I'm very happy with this. I'll go drink a couple of beers now.

I have often felt the same way. But decades ago a priest-friend agreed that while I might feel like round peg in a square hole, that can be better than feeling like a square peg in a round hole. A square peg can't fit into a round hole; a round peg can fit into a square hole -- not properly, not comfortably, but sometimes fairly securely ...

Now, as to whether or not that is a good thing ...

Yup. That was 2 for me, one for @archersuz and one for @JohnEGreen , and they weren't your regular 5% beers either. Then I had a Beerenburg (Friesian schnapps without sugar but 30% alcohol) with the neighbour who came over to ask how his smartphone works.
So now I feel like I've had a good party, I'll eat some crisps to make sure I'm safe tonight (and to enhance te party-ish feeling) and try to read some more of my book.
I might be back later on with more nonsense, as I have a strict no mingling facebook and alcohol rule. No such rule in place here, though
