Hi, I am 19 and have been diabetic for nearly a year and a half (type 1), at first I was great with control etc, but now in the past months I can't seem to take my insulin.

I gained so much weight after diagnosis and I then saw a dietician to loose some but the weight lost stopped and now I loose weight by skipping my insulin. I haven't taken a whole day on injections in months. I am trying to get help from the psychology department but its taking awhile. They also mentioned a pump but I am scared I will gain weight again.

Is there anything I can do to try and get back on track? Not even shock tactics work anymore, I don't know what to do :(

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Charlotte

Re: Diabulimia

Hi charlotte, sorry to hear your having a bad time. I do know that stopping your insulin will result in your body not getting the sugar it needs to function properly. This will result in your body storing fat when it does have insulin as it thinks its starving. Much the same as a non diabetic skipping meals. The key is moderation and excercise. Do you have good levels generally? As the saying goes put out more energy than you put in. this will also lead to a reduction in insulin the more active you are so your exercising, eating healthy, and using less insulin resulting in weight loss. Not that straight forward by far I know but alot of hard work and monitoring of levels.

I also gained some weight in the first year after diagnosis. i was told that insulin doesnt cause weight gain but somehow it did. I think the best solution is to take less insulin and to do that safely you need to eat less carbs. Dont skip injections just change your diet but still remember that insulin (plus excersise) need to cover carbohydrates intake. Having high levels maybe will help you to reduce weight but you will feel rubbish. i dont think its worth it
Good luck. hope you will sort it out soon:)
