Hi guys,

I'm not so new now, 5 months in to diagnosis, but I got diagnosed in Chile while backpacking. I got rushed into hospital and was DKA as I ignored the symptoms for so long. I've been back in the use for near enough 5 months now but still haven't been given a consultant, I've met with a dietician twice and the area diabetes education nurse 3 times, is this normal to not have a consultant this far in?

One of the main reasons I am asking is that I am a very active person and probably go hypo on average once a day (below 3.2 mmol) so wanted to get that sorted either via a pump or different insullin regime.

Thanks in advance

US or UK?

Either way much too long not to have seen a consultant. Go to your doctor and get a referral. Who is prescribing your insulin, meter strips etc? You need to lower your doses if you are going hypo every day.

UK, got referred about 2 months ago but still not heard. Asked the lady who referred me but she can't give me the consultants details, he has to contact me apparently. Bit annoying but will book docs appointment and discuss it with them

So sorry to hear that you have not been given a consultant yet. I returned from living abroad a few years ago and was having a terrible time with really bad hypos without warning symptoms. I saw my G.P. and was put in touch with a DSN within 24 hours and saw a consultant later that week. Since that I am regularly seen by the Diabetic clinic at my nearest hospital. You really need to tell the GP that you are having daily hypos and need to see a consultant urgently

Hi, as others have said ask for an urgent referral you should definitely have seen a consultant long before now. Having hypos each day is pretty uncommon, I get around two a week. Normally you need 1 unit of insulin to 10g of carbohydrates, but you could be on your honeymoon period so may need less insulin. If you are doing exercise you may need less insulin or more carbs. Have you spoken to the dietician about exercise, mine at least does have some knowledge about it and told me some basic stuff. If you need help carb-counting I'd suggest this book: http://www.carbsandcals.com/products/carb-and-calorie-counter-book/ it's helped me quite a bit and was recommended by my dietician.

Hope this helps :)

Hi. I would insist that your surgery offers you insulin support one way or another. My surgery offers a reasonable level of T1/insulin support for 'normal' cases but will refer to the hosptial clinic if needed. You have waited too long. I can get a normal diabetes appointment at my surgery within 2-4 weeks.
