Hi everyone,

I've suspected for a while that I've had diabetes as it's very common within my mother's side of the family. I went to see a doctor on Monday morning and they did a urine test, saying that there were high levels of glucose. They also took blood samples.

I've been back today for the results and they say that it looks like I've got diabetes but they're not sure as to whether it's going to be type 1 or 2. I'm 29 years old. They've put me on Gliclazide 80mg tablets (1 a day) for a week and have given me a blood sugar testing kit to do daily, also Ketone testing strips, and I have to go back to them with the results next Friday. They wanted to see if the Gliclozide would bring my sugar levels down (currently at 14.4).

Oh well, I'm new here so please be nice to me! I feel welcome already.

Cheers!

Just passing by and thought I’d say Hi as no one has responded (might be something to do with that round ball everyone's got their eyes fixed on these days!).
Hope you get some satisfactory replies from the medics soon. Let us know how you get on, and ask anything you want. Someone will know something!

Hi
readings of 14.4 mean you are type 2 not type 1, if you were type 1 you would have gone +35 and needed hospital intervention and then you would be on insulin, So don't worry......

Post your doctors interpretation here, it will be a good way on checking there knowledge, in my experience it is usually limited with diabetes.

Still classified as type 2. I'm on 2x500mg Metformin every morning and the same in the evening, no Gliclazide any more. I'm doing an hour in the gym twice a week (soon to be 3 times and it's a pretty intensive workout for me), I'm still sticking to a low sugar diet, but my blood sugar levels are now back up and are consistently around 10.0 to 14.0 no matter what I do, even a fasting one first thing in the morning. It just seems that Metformin isn't working for me. I searched the forums here for "Metformin isn't working", but as Metformin is a very common word here, the search filters it out. I cannot seem to force it to find "Metformin isn't working".

Any ideas as to 1) how I can search for an answer to my problem and 2) maybe why Metformin might not be bringing my BG down? I'm starting to worry slightly.

Thanks all.

Hey Barnstormer! I'm a recently diagnosed T2 so have limited experience. There are guys on here that really know their onions! :D However, as you mention low sugar diet only, I guess someone is going to ask you at some point what you are actually eating ( e.g. a typical days menu ) and have you investigated/do you know about keeping the carbohydrates in your diet low too?
