I started to regularly test myself with my original meter an Accu-Chek Compact plus GT after having checked with the helpline at Roche that the unit would still be OK. I put new batteries in and bought new test strips after they said it would be fine.
The results I got were at odds with the tale my Hba1c (39) was telling. I had regular 6.0+ or 7.0+ mmol/L readings when the Hba1c suggested that should be much lower. My fasting was 6.5mmol/L.
Bemused by this I got a free upgrade to an aviva and tested myself. - 4.9 mmol/L having not eaten for 6 hours. Given that that equates to an Hba1c of 25.5 I figured that was more likely to be accurate since that would be a low point and with the swings and roundabouts of normal life it was probably accurate relative to my Hba1c than the original meters 6's & 7's. So, as a control I tested my wife who has never had blood sugar issues and she was 4.8! I then took three tests in the space of 5 minutes with the old meter and got 8.6 then 6.9 & then 6.3.
It looks like the old meter was faulty..............
