Diagnosed Type 2 a week ago today

Glad to hear 56 isnt too bad, in the grand scheme of things - I have a better idea of where Im at and have something to work from.
Im going to order one of the meters that bluetit1802 recommended but do i want mmol/L or mg/dL?
Oooh, and how do i work out my %?

Ive made a start on the diet - Im really researching what i can and cant have and trying to get my head round it all. I got a brill cookbook - The complete diabetic cookbook, by bvridget Jones (honest!) £4 from The Works. My mum was so impressed she's bought it too so she can cook healthily for me when we visit.
I had quorn bolognese with corn pasta for my dinner last night - and no garlic bread!
I do need to lose a couple of stone so getting back into some of my size 10/12's is an added incentive!

thanks for all for your help - Im so glad i chose this forum!
I have not read that book but most diabetic cook books seem to be based on the healthy plate. I cant eat anything from them.

Hi I was told on Monday that I am diabetic type 2 my level was 14.9 and my HbA1c test was over 100, have been put on Metformin straight away, have started to change my diet (which is not easy), I have been given a meter to test my levels, but can't remember how long to leave it after a meal before re testing, can anyone help?

Welcome! I think its 2 hours but Im pretty new to this too. This forum is very helpful - it might be worth starting a seperate thread as well as more people are likely to see it that way. People might not always look at a new post in an existing thread?

Test immediately before then again 2 hours after your first bite.

I was diagnosed on the 9th September, since I have replaced table sugar for sweetners, dropped of which sugar to 1or less grams/100 grams, cut my carb portions of my meals & gone from 82kg on day of diagnosis to 79 kg today, 14 day's latter. So heading in the right direction. You will get there.

Welcome Mrs. M lots of good advice here. That is for sure.

One thing I'd like to point out, the whole deal is keeping your BG levels fasting and post grandial after eating as close to normal as you can.

Whether you can do it med and insulin free or with meds is not the point. Keeping you BG low is all its about. Whatever method(s) work for you is the key.

Lastly, this disease has a sneaky was of progressing and changing and if later on you need meds to keep your BG low it is not failure it just the way it is

Hi all,
Ive been diagnosed exactly a week now and still feeling a bit shell shocked and well, impatient really.
The nurse was lovely and very positive about controlling it and it not ruining my life etc. I have been referred to a nutritionist, a diabetes education course and go back to the nurse on 22nd to discuss my habc1? result and check my feet. She wants to avoid putting me on medication unless absolutely necessary and I 100% agree with her.

I just want to know what to do - what changes to make etc so I can start now instead of waiting for appointments.
I bought a couple of books - Diabetes for Dummies was one so Ive been leafing through those when i get chance.

I know I have to lower sugar but I dont have much - sweetner in drinks and diet or no added sugar drinks.
Ive reduced my carbs and have been checking the labels on food so i can go for the lowest carb option (especially the lowest 'of which sugars')

Im just at a bit of a loss really so any help for a newbie would be much appreciated.

Hey Mrs M

I'm sorry to hear that you feel a bit shell shocked after being recently diagnosed. I'm a producer here at a production company called Malt Films, and we are producing a healthy eating series of videos for a well known supermarket. The video will provide you with nutritional advice as to what is best to eat whilst living with Type 2 Diabetes through a practical live cooking element. The video will appear on the supermarkets website to help other people with nutritional advice. As you are newly diagnosed, I was wondering whether this would be something you would be interested in? If so, please drop me a mail at [email protected] we would love to hear from you and offer you help and guidance!

Thanks,

Emma

OMG and just what sort of diet is it recommending? High carb and low fat? If so it could end up killing people!

More people than doing nothing at all?
(Without seeing it first, so obviously assuming we know what the advice is)

Don't think It's a diet as such,, more nutrition advise on what is good & bad for you. Thing with these types of things is the ppl that should be buying cause of poor diet don't, cause they think what they eat is ok. So hence the increase in type 2.

I can't see any major supermarket promoting fat in any quantity. Their shelves are stocked to the brim with low fat products. I find it difficult to find my full fat yogurts buried behind and beneath all the sugar filled fruit and low fat ones.

We are just looking to promote an overall balanced diet, the video will involve someone with diabetes cooking a meal with our presenter, with just a general chat about what is best to eat to achieve overall health. We really would love to get some of you involved, and it would be great to have a chat over Skype if you could maybe find a spare couple of moments? Look forward to hearing from you!
