Diet only
Well after my 2nd fasting blood test with the change to my diet my result has come down from 9.5 to 7.8 so still diagnosed with diabetes but hopeful things are going the right way, that was just after 2 weeks of diet change so I'm really quite pleased!! I have my diabetic review first week in dec so will see how it goes then!! Feeling positive!!

Ohh I meant to ask, alcohol??? I do like a glass of wine or proscecco!! Is this not possible now???? Thanks!! Priorities!! Lol

Well done in what you've achieved your well on the way to mastering you diabetes and it not becoming the master.
As 'BobRobert' says a glass or two of 'Red' wine is definitely beneficial. I've geen trying to persuade my GP to write me a regular prescription for a case of 'Red' wine without ant success, but i'll keep on trying.
Be careful of drinking too much as apart from the obvious disadvantages of drinking to excess, Alcohol will slow down and interfere with normal glucose/insulin uptake in the body, but put quite simple, a little Alcohol taken in moderation is beneficial.

Thank you!! I don't tend to drink through the week, I'm out with the girls on Friday so would normally have wine with dinner!! Would vodka soda and lime be better?? Lol x

Whether its wine, beer, cider or spirits, they all ontain alcohol in their make-up. Alcoholic drinks that contain a mixer such as tonic water, soda, lemonade or what have you have the effect of being absorbed much quicker through the lining of the stomach, compared to say the spirit being drunk by itself.
Also you need to be careful of some wines as their alcoholic content can sometimes be quite high and may well exceed a standard spirit's alcoholic content.
The occasional drink once or twice a week should be fine.

Lots and lots of vodka, dry white wine is ok in moderation - go for it, enjoy yourself :woot:

I think I am correct in saying that spirits are very low in carbs, because they have mostly been distilled out. Vodka, soda and lime would be so-so because of the sugar in the lime (assuming you mean lime cordial) so you'd be better off with vodka and slimline tonic, although there's a whole separate debate about the dangers, or not, of low calorie sweeteners. Personally I dice with death and drink Scotch (my tipple of choice) with low calorie ginger ale, and say the Hell with it :). Wine is kind of middle of the road, with the sweeter white wines, such as Chardonnays, unsurprisingly higher in carbs than dry whites, such as Muscadets, and reds. Worst of all the wines - unfortunately, because I love a glass - are dessert wines like Sauternes and Montbazillac. However, as desserts are a bit of a no-no anyway, I do without both, grit my teeth and smile. Beer is the Great Satan because it's effectively bread in liquid form, and a major carbfest. The other point to note is that alcohol - all alcohol - is high in calories, with wine a particular offender: a large pub measure of red wine contains more calories than a pint of beer. Not great if you're dieting.

Personally, if I couldn't have a drink, I'd lose the will to live anyway, so I risk it, but I am always mindful of the fact that the advice for diabetics (so far as I am aware) is the same as that for anyone else: namely stick to the recommended weekly guidelines (21 units for men and 14 units for women, or some such) and don't save them all up for a binge. I pay more attention to this advice than I used to.....

Santé! :)

Welcome Diane, keep it up!

Thanks everyone for all the advice!! I'm not a massive drinker anyway, having three kids to deal with in the morning after doesn't have the same appeal!! Haha

I'm ok with cava brut :) Enjoy your night out. If in doubt, test your blood sugar level in the loos.

Thank you!! The doctor said I didn't have to test, and if I'm being honest I'm a bit squeamish about needles and stuff!! Haven't got my head around that yet!! Lol x

The doctors say dont test but you must test to stay on line,I have taken control by testing.
I enjoy Gin and slimline tonic.
testing is easy.and painless
You will get lots of advice from this forum, read the posts.

Sorry to stay on line?? X

Sorry badly put,I mean to always know what your blood sugar is then you know what you can eat,the only way to do that is to test

No expert but my understanding is that there is a school of thought that red wine can, in moderation, benefit your 'good' (HDL) cholesterol level, which white win can't. However, my research indicates that wine, regardless of colour, is low in sugar because most of the sugar has been converted to alcohol and so it's not going to give your system a sugar shock (it's a low carb, low GI beverage) - however - the alcohol in wine makes it high in calories - around 125 calories in an average glass.
