I was just keen to hear people's experiences on there diagnoses for type 1 diabetes.

My doctor told me it could be due to environmental factors or from the result of a recent viral illness.

Keep smiling

I thought it was an auto immune problem

T1 is commonly the result of an auto-immune reaction but there are other causes such as viruses, pancreatitis and so on. It's important that it isn't assumed it is just an auto-immune disease with GAD being the deciding factor - it's not that simple.

Well?

I was kind of diagnosed on my 8th birthday.. Our GP at the time kind of fobbed my mother off by suggesting it was an expensive illness to treat..
She then ran me round to a kiddie ward where a nurse friend admitted me pronto.. Another nurse asked my mum (over my head.)if I had somehow had a trauma?
To which my mum replied I had "fallen down a set of stairs when I was about 5?"
I do have a memory of the fall incident, I came out of it bouncing like Tigger!

This was the summer of 1976. So I haven't all the details... But I don't believe falling like a stuntman in a Western or the punk explosion had anything to do with it!

I am not a T1 but I do have an auto immune disease. And like most people with one no one can truly say why. I just went to bed feeling fine one night and when I awoke there it was. Literally in the blink of an eye.
