Diagnosis of Diabetes

I recently had a glucose tolerance test for diagnosing Diabetes, as there is a strong family history(Mother and 2 siblings). The results were as follows. Fasting-5.8 mol and post-prandial 12.8 mmol. I have no symptoms at all. Am I diabetic or do I have Glucose Intolerence?

Only your doctor can diagnose this, so I suggest you go back and discuss the result with him/her.

As a general rule if your blood glucose is above 11, 2 hours after you drank the glucose drink, then diabetes is likely. But talk to your doctor.

In my experience, glucose intolerance will turn into diabetes unless you take charge of your lifestyle. If you get an early diagnosis, it's possible to turn things round. Being diagnosed Type 2 was the best thing that ever happened to me :D . Go talk to your doctor, then come back and let us know. We'll do our best to help.

PS I have never had symptoms, either. But I'm still Type 2 :D

Thanks Viv,
I have contacted my doctor and he wants to repeat the GTT, as the fasting result is within the normal limit. I am already on low carb diet and am not overweight. Presently on no medication and have a healthy life style with no smoking, no alcohol and plenty of exercise

It could well be that the low-carb diet is masking the diabetes - you are already lowering your blood glucose levels with your diet.

It is usually recommended that a low-carber should eat at least 150g carb per day for 3 days before a GTT. That way you get a more "normal" reading. After all, all that diabetes is, is an inability to metabolize carbohydrate correctly, for whatever reason. If you're low-carbing, it doesn't show.

I low-carb too, and my levels are now hardly ever out of the non-diabetic range (except when I have a blip!) But I'm still diabetic, and those blips, eg about 3 days over Christmas, let me know that I am.

Don't worry about it too much - if you're going to low-carb for the rest of your life, then you are already on the way to controllng Type 2 diabetes if you do have it. :D

PS Contrary to what the press like to tell us, being fat is not essential to being Type 2 diabetic. In fact, about 20% of Type 2s are skinny. Just as about 80% of overweight people are not diabetic.
