Type of diabetes
Treatment type
Insulin
I have been diabetic, type 2 for 20 years and was diagnosed whilst pregnant. I have never had my diabetes totally under control for many reasons, I was wondering can a type 2 diabetic become type 1?

A Type 2, unless misdiagnosed can never become a Type 1, they will always be a Type 2, but they may use insulin to control their blood sugar levels.

Well I've been thinking bout this. What if a type 2 becomes type 2 through poor diet. (not all cases I know). Through meds, diet, lifestyle whatever manages to loose necessary weight to be not resistant to insulin. However, due to the fact of their pancreas being overworked has a greatly reduced output of natural insulin. So, in effect they are non resistant to insulin due to changes made, weight loss etc, which would normally mean their diabetes is under control, not cured, but left with a poor insilin production. But, should they start injecting insulin, just topping up their own due to decreased function then what type are they then?

Hi Helen, if your doctors didn't do a GAD and a C-Peptide blood test on u after u gave birth then u may have never been a type 2 in the first place. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my son despite never being overweight and being young and they told me it had gone away after I had him, only for it to return 2yrs later when I was still young and still not overweight and so they did the full blood tests and I am slow onset type 1, not type 2 at all and never have been....

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.
