Hi, I'm on my holiday in Cadiz. I've visited some of the places recommended on here by other members--thanks! I've managed to continue my lowish carb diet with ease and have enjoyed local cheese, meat, fish and veg, although I find the veg selections have the 1980s vibes that initially put me off a lot of veg so thanks.
However, I brought my BGM and thought I'd use the break as an excuse to try breaking some rules and monitoring the results as I've got a sneaking suspicion I'm not prediabetic and got two false highs from being vitamin B12 deficient.
So, in the name of science (!), I had three large slices of sourdough pizza piles with cheese, meat and veg. . I checked my BG before starting the pizza. It was 4.3 and two hours later, it was 6.2. All good! I was excited! For full.disclosure, up to the point I had the pizza at 8:15 pm, I had only cured meat, cheese, full fat yoghurt, some berries and tomatoes, two or three walnuts and my usual soaked chia seeds. I also had one small glass of dry red wine before eating and one very small glass before bed, at half eleven. However, I'm now in bed very unwell having been up from 3 am with horrific diarrhea and nausea and stomach cramps (not as bad as menstrual ones, but unpleasant). Each episode was accompanied with running sweat and racing heart. I measured my BG at 3.45 am and it was 5.7.
I have a few ideas about what might be causing this:
A) I've barely eaten any gluten or flour since going lowish carb about. 2.5 months ago? Maybe my body is shocked by the gluten/wheat. I've had pretty mild IBS throughout my life, which I've managed to treat by adjusting my diet (low FODMAP) and I've had no IBS symptoms (which was almost always bad constipation) since going lowish carb and cutting wheat almost entirely. The only wheat I have now is the very occasional slice of livlife superseded bread.
B) I simply got food poisoning. However, I ate all the same things as my young son and partner, except they also had bread/chips/patatas etc.
C) tummy bug
D) I think it's highly unlikely it's related to the prediabetes given the good readings I got, but I'm also vaguely aware of how the body deals with alcohol.
I won't be trying pizza again for a very long time anyway! Or maybe I should try some ordinary white bread and see how it affects me.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
