Did I have the start of a hypo?

hi everyone, I found out I had type 2 9 days ago my blood suger was in its 20's I'm currently on gliclazide 80mg i am getting down to 6-7 during the day but on Thursday I had didn't have dinner till late and b4 dinner I was acting drunk and Shaky talking pure rubbish and laughing my reading was 5.1 was this the start of a hypo??? I was told 4 ans under is chance for hypo...? I have never been that low before !! I'm now starting metformin as well as gliclazide and have changed my diet scared of having these symptoms again
 
5.1 would not technically put you in a hypoglycemic state. However, if your BGL has been high for a sustained period and 'up in the 20's', your body may be not used to what is perceived as 'normal' and misinterpreting this value as 'low'.

It is known for some T1D's to become hypo unaware, caused by continuous low blood glucose levels. This is when the body perceives a BGL < 3.8 mmol/L as normal and thus doesn't present the normal symptoms. i.e. shaking, sweating, confusion, etc.

It could be that you are experiencing the opposite of 'hypo unawareness' as stated above. I'd consult your diabetic specialist though just to be safe :) Your body should adjust it's perception of normal once it gets used to what is in fact normal.

Hello and welcome to the forum ☺ From my own personal experience, a reading in the 5s is perfectly alright and normal within range, but everyone is different and can tolerate varying levels. It may also be that your body is also adjusting to having lower levels of sugar so maybe reacting as a hypo? Did you take your gliclazide with your meal or did you take it before ha d and then not eat until later, as taking gliclaide and skipping meal can make you hypo. I'm also in gliclazide and had problems at first but seem to have settled now that my body has adjusted. Hypos usually occur 4 or below I now know the symptoms and have a quick sugary treat and if at home follow up by a long lasting carb, that seems to do the trick for me.
 
A reading of 5.1 is in normal range. Although on saying that meters are not 100% accurate and you could in fact be less than what your meter is saying... although usually it's not a huge difference. I start to get hypo symptoms in the 4 range. I always have ever since my first hypo where I had 4.2 on the meter. I walked into a wall for that one. So if you are concerned about how you're feeling, a little bit of quick acting carb to get you above 6 may help. I agree with what others are saying in regard to your body probably being used to having high sugar levels. So yes you may be reacting to the lower number. But then also you need to be careful to not do anything risky when you feel that way. You also are on gliclazide and you didn't eat at your usual time so I'd say the biggest factor here for you is that your sugar level was dropping and quickly.... hence the horrible hypo symptoms. Take note of those symptoms too as your body is warning you. If you were to test 15 mins or more later after that 5.1 reading I'd say you would've dropped a lot further. This is the stuff you will learn for yourself as you continue on your journey. It is all a learning curve. I wish you the best. :)
 
Hi everyone thanks for your help I did take my medication when I had my dinner so I hadn't skipped meals must just be getting my body used to a lower suger level . I've been high the last 2 days sitting around 11 and I feel fine! Hope I get used to it all soon
