Hi all, I hope someone can help with some advice. I have type 2 diabetes and am on Empagliflozin and Metformin. I started slimming world 3 wks ago and have lost half a stone. I have recently been having very hypo like symptoms and was wondering if anyone could advice ?? I am thinking maybe due to the diet change my sugars could be lower hence the symptoms? I know they say that Metformin cannot cause hypos but?? Hope this make sense.

I'd say, get yourself a meter and check what your blood sugars are doing when you feel like that. Neither med can cause hypo's, but if you're lower than you're used to, your body can come up with something called a false hypo. Feels like one, acts like one, but doesn't have the actual numbers to back it up. Also, I don't know how long you've been using the empagliflozin, but if you check the side effects, they list an awful low of symptoms that would occur during a hypo too (like cold sweats, fainting, confusion etc).

Far as I know Slimming World doesn't cater to diabetics (with a low carb diet), so I have no way of knowing what your blood sugars are doing unless you start testing around meals... (Testing before a meal and two hours after the first bite. You're looking for a rise of no more than 2.0 mmol/l) Slimming world might make you lose some weight now, but it may not be working so well for your blood sugars. It might be, but it might not. Being high can cause the same symptoms as being low. So that's something to investigate with a meter.

Good luck!

Unless Slimming World have drastically changed their diets, from when I went 4 years ago, are carb heavy and low fat, encouraging you to use spreads such as Flora and seed oils, these are toxic, (not to be confused with olive or avocado oil). I remember having a conversation with the lady that ran the class and she said I can eat as many baked potatoes as I want as long as I don’t put butter or cheese on them
