DISHONESTY,
Hi
I am a type 1 Diabetic with really awful spelling so please bear with me Lol.
I have been diabetic for 25 years now so I do kinda know how it works. I use the basil bolus scheme and inject 18 units of Lantus glargine at tea time (24 hourly) and regular (when needed) injections of Humalog 100 U/ml. I wanted to ask if anyone has any advice for me. I have been dieting and excersising for 3 weeks now, I weighed 143Lbs and am 5'3 I ve managed to drop a dress size which is good . I power walk and jog roughly 2 miles a day 5 times a week. I have lowered my calorie and carb intake by completely cutting out starchy carbs, ... bread, pasta, rice and pastry. I am eating lots of fresh veg, fish, some meats but not that often, salad and tinned fruit in juice. I am aware there is a lot of natural sugars in fruit but I dont want to rule out all foods I enjoy. I also have not ruled out fibrous cerials eg albran.
I noticed in the first 10 days or so my insulin intake could be cut considerably. However over the past few days my sugars have been high and yet my routine has remained the same. The first 10 days or so I was running at between a reading of 5 and 8 and now it s shot up to between 14 and even 20 at worst. I test regulaly so I can bring it under control in good time but I dont want to be taking lots of insulin again. Does anyone have any ideas or experiances that may explain why this is happening only I need to keep at it and I dont want this to hinder me because excersise is so much harder when I run at levels like this not to mention my motivation takes a dive which I really dont need.
Any advice would be great thanx guys .

Hi.
Welcome to the Forum.

It's good to hear that because you have reduced the carbs that you have been able to reduce your Insulin.

You don't actually tell us when those high Bg levels are taking place. Fasting/pre-meal/post meal ???

I hope that you are not exercising when you have these high (14 - 20) levels as that could be dangerous especially as you are a Type 1.........DKA !

I am sure that some T1's will be along at some point.

Hi,
thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
I am getting those results at all times really for example yesterday I woke with a BM of 9 I had a cup of coffee with original coffee mate (3 Tspoons) I took 4 units of Humalog and then walked my son to school a 3/3.5 mile round trip with intermittent jogging it took me just over an hour. When I got in I tested my sugars and they were 19 I took 5 units of Humalog and sat for a while at around 12;30 I had a small bowl of Albran with semi skimmed milk after an hour or so I checked them again and they were back down to 9 so that was around 1;30 at 4 I had 6 more units of Humalog followed by a bowl of tinned fruit (1 tin) and some coleslaw and 2 corn on the cobs with flora margarine .... in that order Lol. Since my new routine 6 units is a lot of insulin for me. At around 6 O clock when I checked them again they were 22 I treated that with another 6 units and checked them again at 9 they were 15 so I took 3 more units. I finally went to bed at 11 o clock with a sugar reading of 15. I took another 3 units made sure I had sugar water by my bed. I didn't need it and woke with sugars of 12. Today's sugars and routine have been the same apart from, if anything, I've eaten less carbs. I do drink a lot of coffee with coffee mate in but during the first week this didn't seem to cause an issue.
Before my new routine I always ran on the high side.
Does the premenstrual week effect sugar levels ?? and in what way can exercise at high sugar levels be dangerous ??
Thanks so much

I won't go into too much detail but some of your foods are high in carbs so will have an upward effect on Bg levels unless covered with your Insulin. Hopefully some more T1's will be along and can advise you about your Insulin to Carb ratio which may need adjustment. It's the weekend so may not be many around yet.

Specific's are that anything like the pre-menstrual tension can affect your Bg levels, infections, are you coming down with something, stress, heat, cold etc........all will have an effect, usually detrimental.

As for DKA....here is a useful link to much information about it.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/fac ... idosis.htm

There have been several recent threads about DKA and Exercise.

Basically if you have Bg levels above around 13 mmol/l you should be checking for ketones.......if present in medium to high levels then you should NEVER exercise as you run the risk of DKA, which as you know is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention and Hospital treatment. Not good !

That is why exercise at those levels CAN be dangerous.
