Diet control....WHAT?

Hello.

I am just about to go for a medical to asess invalidity grade. My doctor has put in his report that my type two diabetes is controled by Metaformin and diet.

Well I remember the Metaformin, but that is the FIRST time any one has ever mentioned diet to me.

So when I try to impress the Government doctor, WHAT do I tell him I eat? :?

(My own doctor is away until after the medical, so I can not ask him....but I WILL :twisted: )
 
Just tell them that you have reduced your carbohydrate intake to keep your blood sugar levels down.Say you have reduced portion sizes of bread,pasta ,rice and potatoes etc.How much detail will they want?

Talking of bread though, I can EASILY eat a loaf a day. and ONLY bread stops me being hungry. Pasta, rice, meat, ANYTHING else, forget it, unless it is on a butty.

If I have to give THAT up. I am in REAL trouble. I would be climbing the walls and taking bites out of the cat.

Rather that than starve. But really no one has ever told me. :shock:

I have both personaly and proffessionaly (police) met SERIOUS alcoholics. I am like that with bread.

There are complications as well, in my case, I ALSO have nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. So to get values is, to say the least, awkward.
 
I gave up bread,I now eat ,on average 2 slices a week,Don't miss it at all.Try substituting it with oatcakes,nuts,something else you like.try cutting it out of one particular part of the day to start with ,see how you go.it's not easy,but ,in the end,when you get good control ,it is worth it.
 
Hi Ragnar,

Bread and carbs are addictive - I'm sure of it! I find it really hard to 'come off' them, but once you've got past day 2 you start to forget about your carb cravings and actually feel a lot less hungry. Try it you might like it ;-)

I'm reading Potatoes not Prozac at the moment, kindly recommended to me by someone on this forum, it explains loads about sugar addiction.

Hmm Sugar. I HAVE been known to eat a whole Kilo of demarara in a day, just by shoveling it in by the spoonfull. But normaly when I have had no bread.

By the way oats and nuts I can not touch, as I have gout. I would not be able to walk further than the bathroom for a week, and THAT takes 10 to 15 minutes when it is really bad.

But THAT was caused by the Diabetes Insipidus.

Hi Ragnar,

From what you have described to us one thing that is certain is that your diabetes in anything but controlled. I won't mince words with you, the levels of bread and sugar that you consume are absolutely suicidal. What on earth are your blood sugar levels like?
 
No idea. I have no self testing kit. But i am on 2x1000 Mg Metaformin per day.

Also a question. I do not know if it is linked, but I have had three thrombses in my left calf in the last year. Two within the last month. "Oberflächig" was the description. So not deep vein, and "Thrombophlebitis" is the name on the report. Now one doctor tells me that, that is a thrombosis, and another sais it is not. Hmm. :?

I also wrote last time I was here, regarding the roughly 1 inch round purple blotch on the top of my, AGAIN left, foot arch.
That is the top of the foot, above the arch. Now I have not been told a whole Hel of a lot about dibetic foot either. And because I have gout, I do not know if a pain is "normal" or not.

It is all VERY confussed.

You are in trouble. Much probably of your own making. You need a stricter doctor, who will let you self test. then you will see from meal to meal what damge you are doing to yourself. Haven't they tested you at your health centre? Phone them and ask for your results. Are you in a German speaking country?
 
IMO your problems are aggravated by your diet.

Your excessive carb consumption will result in dangerously high blood sugars & a demand for drinking & urination, which can only aggravate your Diabetes Insipidus & other conditions. You avoid certain foods that you say aggravate gout, but major on other foods which will also aggravate your conditions.

You say, "If I have to give THAT (BREAD) up. I am in REAL trouble. I would be climbing the walls and taking bites out of the cat." Keep your cat's basket on the floor, or does she climb the wall to escape from you? Eating rabbit would be preferable - healthy herbivor meat.

With your catalogue of health problems, you need to get serious professional advice, including monitoring by a dietitian.

Aye and that is EXACTLY what the doctor sais. What he does NOT tell me is what I CAN eat. I can eat no meat, beans, pulses, grain, nuts, cheese, Butter, citrus fruits, many types of fish, etc because I can LITERALY not walk to the **** toilet in a 60M² flat in less than 15 - 20 minutes. NOW they come along and say I can not eat bread, pasta, sugar, poztatoes, and all the raest.

Would any one care to tell me what is left OVER, that I CAN eat?

they do do self testing in Germany, but I suppose it varies from Land to Land. My cousin in Weinsberg( near Heilbronn)uses it. She is a T1 and tests several times every day.
 
Ragnar,

We are not dietitians - this is why it is important that you go and see one. Your doctor clearly isn't giving you a great deal of information or help but Berlin must have many hospitals with specialist diabetes units. Can't you make an appointment to see someone there?

I was in the renal department of the Royal Liverpool hospital three times for tests. Two stays of a fortnight and one of a month and a half, with blood tests every hour for 10 hours per day.(Proffessor Doctor Taylor. Some of you from the North West MAY know him). Plus ongoing twice weekly visits for five years.

Never gave me any treatment for it though. At the time (1980 till 1985) the doctor said there WAS no treatment.

They found that Allopurinol GIVES me gout, (five to six attacks per month WITH, 2 to 3 without) and if I HAVE gout, the BEST and quickest way of getting rid, is to drink Beer! (If I do not have any beer for a week to a week and a half, I am GARUNTEED of getting gout.) They also found that a LOT of medicines have opposite reactions on me than on "normal" people. Diruetics, for example, STOP me going to the toilet, 80% of pain killers make it worse, e.t.c.

THAT was because of the Diabetes insipidus, and the kidney workings. (My Uncle, and my Sisters two kids were found to be the same. At the time besides us, there were only two other cases of our particular sort of insipidus diagnosed in the U.K. In Germany however, there are about 40 known cases).

NOW, just to complicate matters re testing, I have Type 2 diabetes as well. So with any test results, no one can tell if the symptom is caused by Insipidus, or by type 2. Strangely, since I have been taking the Metaformin, I have had about 50% fewer gout attacks. :? :?:
 
Is your list of foods you should not eat (about 100% of all food types) a result of trial & error or what you have been told?

I think you can be sure that there is a good basis for diabetics of all varieties not eating substantial quantities of flour & sugar products. I understand gout is an acidity problem. (Uric acid in the joints.) There is likely to be personal variation in the reaction to the forbidden foods.

I would suggest you gradually introduce new foods into your diet & test your reaction, both subjectively & with a blood sugar meter. Rabbit & chicken may be good to start with.

My staple, which I eat as a bread substitute, grab-&-go snack, hot (1 minute in the microwave) or cold is a savoury slice:

150 g grated carrot
120 g grated cheese
120 g "flour" which may be ground almonds, oat bran, wheat germ, gram flour, oats, or any combination (almonds only gives a very low carb food)
2 g baking powder (optional)
50 g soft margarine (I use Benecol)
2 eggs
spices, herbs, salt, to taste
mix well together & spread into a buttered square tin
mark into 16 divisions

cook at 190-200°C for 28-30 minutes
recut the divisions
after cooling keep in the fridge

For a sweet version, replace the carrot with apple & add sweetener, & use a mild cheese

You do need proper medical & dietetic advice & care, as the complications from uncontrolled diabetes are serious.
