Diet Doctor Low Carb Challenge

We had the cauliflower soup, with cream cheese, an astonishing amount of butter, and panchetta for supper last night.

I only had a small cauli, so I added a large courgette and a small aubergine, to bump up the veg, but followed the rest of the recipe diligently.

Very rich soup, but only a small bowl each. So I ended up snacking before I could sleep. 2nd day of this. But I think it has more to do with heavy brain usage at work, than to do with lack of food. Will see what happens today, since things are calming down a little at work now.

Woo Hoooo - look at your FBG - 6.4 !!!! Congratulations

I usually enjoy menu planning but this is.... difficult.... so many criteria and then my personal likes and dislikes to take in to account.

I think I can cut down on breakfasts and lunches a bit but its going to be difficult cutting down dinner too much because my husband is getting a bit anxious about what exactly I'm eating. I don't know why - its not like I'm losing any weight and my BG is relatively stable but he's a worrier.

I'm working on a list of small meals that I can have for either breakfasts or lunches and then that just gives me the dinners to think about when planning weekly menus. I'm using MFP to track it all. Avocadoes are featuring quite heavily as is.... mackerel (but fried in olive oil now) Gotta have those good fats.

OMG - that soup sounds amazing!! I wish Mr C would have soup for dinner but he thinks its okay for lunch or as a starter for dinner but not for the main event.

Must think about soups for lunch, must think about soups for lunch, must think about soups for lunch......

I'll obviously post what I'm eating too with the protein count. Breakfast was a minor tweak for a decent saving in protein and carbs are negligible.
Yes overnight (apart from the 3am dip) I was steady in the low 6's. I always finger prick before sleep and fasting as then I know what it is doing overnight for certain. Libre is fairly settled today but it took a while to come back down after breakfast although back in the 6's now.
I'm considering making a garlic and spinach soup. Had it at EH15 a few weeks ago and it was delicious. The quicker Diet Doctor let's you construct your own weekly plans the better. I'd never have the time to do this if I still worked and thankfully it's school holidays which gives me a bit more time.

Same here. I've managed to prepare a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner for next week but I haven't got any proper work done. I then set up an Asda order for those foods plus usual stuff - and then found Asda have discontinued Mr C's favourite oranges - so I texted him to ask what he wants instead (he's picky about fruit) and I got a long text back asking for a chicken curry, slow roast pork with fennel and a chicken and asparagus risotto next week - no mention of his oranges though. So back to the drawing board to try to include at least one of his choices.

I also used MFP to workout half a dozen or so each of breakfasts and lunches which will make menu building a bit easier in the future (hopefully).

I'd forgotten about spinach and garlic soup - do you make yours with roasted garlic? It gives it a nice smokey taste. I like roasted garlic and cauliflower soup as well but it need quite a lot of cream to make it as I prefer it.

this is that soup recipe
https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/cauliflower-soup-crumbled-pancetta
mine turned out an interesting shade of grey green on account of the extra courgette and aubergine
Not sure about the nuts but the rest of it sounds lovely.

Grey green soup sounds almost normal sort of River Thames colour?). I once had an electric blue omelette made with red cabbage (quite nice except for the colour). You'd have thought it would turn purple so blue was quite a shock. Very Star Trek. ,

@maglil55 How are you doing today? I'm resisting all snacks and extras but I'm freezing. I've got the heating turned up but I can't get warm.

I'm still trying to work things out. I've written to Diet Doctor again to ask if they know when the meal planner functionality will be improved. Today I kept it simple as I had food needing used so
Breakfast - 1 egg omelette with 3 chestnut mushrooms, 3 vittoria tomatoes, 1 rasher of bacon, spinach and beansprouts and my usual parsley and a dash of cream.
Came in at Carbs 3g Protein 14g Fat 28g

Lunch - leftovers of yesterday's prawn red curry with cauliflower rice
Came in at Carbs 10g Protein 16g Fat 26g

Dinner went for 1 slice deli roast pork, 1 fire and smoke turkey, 4 Lidl German sausage mix, romaine lettuce, tomato, cucumber, 1/2 avocado , wee bit cheese and good old Helmanns. 1 bit Lindt 90%
That came in at Carbs 10g Protein 23g Fat 38g

So 23g carbs - fibre 10g so 13g net carbs
Protein 53g
Fat 92g

Going to have to feed more Diet Doctor recipes into MFP.

Like most things I vary the Recipe. Rather than a vegetable stock I'll make a chicken stock and add in some vegetable stock pots. Will probably use smoked garlic. Chopped shallots , loads of spinach, fair bit garlic and double cream. Should have potato in to thicken but that's a no no so I'll use cauliflower rice.

This is very much a guess and taste soup for me. I'll keep adding and tasting until I get the taste I want. At a decent estimate it's 6 g each carbs and protein and around 130 calories. Fat depends on the cream added. Could be a good one. Will probably add a couple of sticks of celery too.

What a difference a day makes / twenty four little hours.

Yesterday's FBG was 7.5 and today's was 5.3! Two things were different, first the restriction of protein and calories as well as carbs and, second, my alarm woke me out of a really deep sleep at 7am (disturbed night : Jack had one of his 'moments' at 2.40 and I had a nightmare at 3.50 - first for a long time). I'm really hoping it's the dietary cause because I can't cope with broken nights and nightmares.

So I was up at 7am and are breakfast at 7.10 - hopefully it will stop the rise.

Jack managed to get hold of the notebook I wrote all the diet stuff in yesterday but I've managed to salvage most of it but I need to write it out again.

I wonder if this way of eating has a name?

Broken nights and nightmares always send my DP higher. Much higher. So hopefully it is the protein giving you the good result today.

Now that I have been consistently back DDing for a week(?) my DP has drifted down again, and my daytime numbers are in the 5s all day again. DD meals don't even blip my bg, so long as I keep my protein to the suggested portions or below.

I am determined not to get precious about this. Life is too short not to have a bit of food fun on holiday, or special occasions. Of have a what-the-hell steak binge on a Saturday afternoon. I low carb ALL the time, but I am not going to restrict myself to less than 20g carbs every day for the rest of my life. That would be just setting myself up for failure. However, my body really does like these lower carb numbers. I feel great on it.

Yes, I agree, I don't want to be the one at a meal with friends or family that can't eat this or can't eat that. My sister (slim, non diabetic, blonde, pretty) was just like that and it often spoiled everyone else's meals.

Normally when eating out we plan for it in advance but if we can't do that (e.g. work meals out or someone's birthday meal) then we just do our best. I say 'we' because Mr C is low carbing too, with the addition of fruit.

Interesting - obviously one egg, half a Lidl protein roll and a tablespoon of Hellmans isn't enough to stop the DP rise because FBG was 5.3 and I had breakfast 10 minutes after getting up yet two hours later my BG is at 6.7. I obviously need a bigger breakfast. Hmmmmmm!

Maybe a bigger breakfast and no lunch.

Another change. Bed on 6.3 FBG 7.3 Pre breakfast 7.9. Been worse!
Stuck with the same breakfast , the 1 egg omelette packed with veggies so it kept the protein at 14g. Rest of the day ? No idea to be honest. Will look for something that appeals although I reckon it is going to be spinach and garlic soup.
I was surprised with the morning figures as I was ďepositing No 2 at nursery this morning ( they usually have at least 1 odd day during holidays) . No 1 is at schooĺ holiday club and they are off to the cinema today. So peace until I pick them up around 5.30 to take them home.
BG still coming down post breakfast. Back in the low 7's coming up to the 2 hour mark. It will drop further but it has been taking its time.
Brother baçk from holiday with a cold (not unusual) which he has kindly shared with Hubby. No doubt I'll be next!
I'm currently running a clean up on my laptop. Note to self - turn it on every so often then it won't take hours to update at a snail's pace. Also althoùgh Ì deleted emails on my phone/tablet it hasn't sync'd with the laptop. Great , hundreds of emails to wipe (assuming it ever stops updating).
Poor Jack - he does seem to be making up from his previous lack of puppy mischief. At first I though you said Jack had the nightmare. Not fun although I have more than enough with Hubby yapping on in his sleep.
Ah well going to make a food decision.

Now see , I'd reaĺly like these figures.

It carries on rising until 7.8 at 11am then started coming down (almost like I didn't have breakfast) it's 5.6 now. I've changed my cunning plan.... I'm going to have a good breakfast and dinner and skip lunch.

I'm catering buffet style for several people on Saturday so can't immediately pre dinner weigh out my food. I've just done a rough estimate and my carbs will be less than 10 for the whole day but the protein will be up to about 65. I'm hoping my metabolism will have a good time converting the excess protein in to glucose while it hasn't got much in the way of carbs to work in.

Jack does have nightmares and (weirdly) he sleeps with his eyes open - but it wasn't him this time. I woke up crying and leaning over Mr C shouting at him that he must breathe. Horrible. I know why I have them but I haven't had one like that for a few years.

My morning FBG has settled back to between 7.5 and 8.0. I tried to reduce my overall intake of food but my liver got a bit upset and dragged something else into the equation and moved the FBG higher.

Going with the flow at the moment but keeping the lid tightly on the carbs still.

We're away at the weekend meeting up with my brother - posh hotel and two rosette restaurant - had a look at the menu and decided what to have in advance

http://www.bedfordswanhotel.co.uk/river-rooms-a-la-carte-menu-feb-2017

On a positive note - BG before tea tonight was 6.0 - lowest I've ever measured.

I've found that what I have for dinner and any evening snacks affect my FBG - which is depressing but hopefully my liver 's glycogen reserves will empty soon. I'm finding that protein at dinner is also affecting my FBG.

That menu is gorgeous! I think I'd have the duck . Let us know what you chose to have.

Went to bed on 4.6 and FBG this morning was 5.9. Surely my liver has got to run out of stored glycogen soon??
