I quite like things lke porridge, grains, vegetables etc so when I was diagnosed years ago with diabetes the diet was not a real challenge . . . except for my crisps addiction!

I developed ulcerative colitis [UC] some years back and many of the things recommended for a diabetic diet are not compatible with UC and vice versa.

For example, I used to have a banana with breakfast as it is a prebiotic and helps feed the good bacteria (probacteria). Taking probacteria supplements has played a major part in controlling my UC but the banana now pushes my blood results up too high.

Does anyone have any diet suggestions for diabetics with UC etc?

The only things I tend to avoid are dairy products, they really upset my UC :yuck: Instead I have rice milk products and they work great for me. I think sometimes you have to work out what triggers your UC, for me it's dairy but sometimes a flare up will happen with no reason at all. BTW I still have bananas but only a small one - I'm T1 by the way, I don't know if it's different for T2s?

It is different for Type 2's not on insulin as we have to control our levels by diet, so a banana is not a good choice.

I have no idea what helps or hinders UC but do know that low/reduced carb is the only way to control BS effectively, and that includes rice, pasta, spuds, bread, cereals, milk and fruit.

You might also want to ask for advice on the UC/Crohn's forums, they will be people there who have both UC and diabetes.

It is a difficult one.
Do you take steroids when you have a flare up? During flare ups there is a possibility that fats in your diet will cause diarrhoea and you also may need vitamin supplements to make sure that your body has enough of the essential vitamins as they can be lost during flare ups. Are there foods that you avoid?
If you didn't have UC then there would be plenty of advice here but I think you need your Dr. to refer you to a dietitian that specialises in IBD.

As Noblehead says, you may be able to get advice from UC forums or their organisation.

I agree any condition that affects your bowels/stomach then you should see your doctor before changing stuff in your diet

Do you find any slight flare increases your BG? I've had my colon removed now and thought that would be the end of it, but now have proctitis which I think is not helping my levels at all!
Waiting to hear back about a biopsy I had last month but it's looking like more major surgery :( But if that finally sorts it out then I won't complain.

And yes, eating to suit both conditions is certainly not easy! I'm eating more for my diabtes at the moment in an effort to lower levels, so am getting more minor blockages and leaks than usual, making my skin under the pouch very sore, just can't win!
