Hi. Been diagnosed since Dec 2007 was doing great until about 6 months ago. Dad diagnosed with kidney failure in 2008, then Prostate cancer in Dec 2016. So stress levels have been building over the years. Started a job as a Support Worker and my eating habits have been pathetic. Throwing oven chips and something in the microwave has been the easiest option. I've rejoined the gym and am trying to eat more fish, rice and fruit and veg and walking more. I don't think I drink enough water and was unsure if that can contribute to feeling ill nearly all the time lately.
Does anyone have any good ideas for food I can make up ready for work so I can eat better and get back to the way I was?
I work 8-23.00 then sleep over till 8am and might do that 2 or 4 days a week, I could also do 6 hours then go home. I take apples, bananas with me and have cereal in morning. I eat a lot of bread and eggs, I always was told eggs are good for you as long as you fry them dry. Any advice, help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

What are your blood sugars doing? you are on a pretty carb intensive diet for a Type 2.
Rice, fruit, chips, bread are not good for you. Try cutting down on carbs and eating more salad green veg and meat. Eggs are great maybe add some butter, cream and cheese.. Yes a lot of us follow a Low Carb High Fat diet to control our bloods and we loose weight and feel great and even better.. enjoy food too!

There going high lately. I have been eating Chicken with chopped tomatoes just looks like I need to find something to replace bread with.

Hi,

I agree, your carbohydrate consumption is far too great for a Type 2 on Metformin only. This is probably why you feel ill - your blood sugar levels will be higher than acceptable and your natural insulin won't be coping with it.

Cereals, fruit, rice, bread, plus other major carbs like potatoes, pastry and pasta are not wise choices in quantity. All carbs convert to glucose once inside the system, and it is possible you probably have far to much glucose floating about.

You could make packed lunches with cold meats, boiled eggs (as many as you want), cherry toms, salad leaves, mayonnaise, cheese, plain unsweetened yogurts with a few raspberries added for sweetness (full fat yogurts are the best). You can eat proper fried eggs, no need to fry them dry.

Yes, drink loads of water.

Do you have a meter? If so, test before you eat and again 2 hours after first bite. Take note of the rise from before to after and try to keep that under 2mmol/l, less preferably. Try to be under 7.8 at all times. If you keep a food diary including portion sizes and record your levels alongside patterns will emerge and you will know which foods are doing you harm.
