A lot of conflicting advice on diet - is it best to take a low-carb diet, or simply cut out sugars and fat?
Practically all carbs turn to glucose (sugar) once ingested, so you want to avoid those. There's 3 macro-nutrients, fats, protein and carbs... And you don't actually need carbs. Cut those out, up the fats, keep protein moderate (Fats don't convert to sugars, protein can, but not as dramatically as carbs do). If you cut out both carbs and fats, you'll most likely be hungry all the time and get malnourished. And no-one wants you to get scurvy. You need to get your micro-nutrients from somewhere, (vitamins, minerals), and those are in fats and protein. So... Turns out, fat's your friend!A lot of conflicting advice on diet - is it best to take a low-carb diet, or simply cut out sugars and fat?
I don't know what you ate while on the Atkins diet, but if it included the bars and such... They contain artificial sweeteners. Which are poisonous to the gut bacteria that help us digest and move food. That was a big problem for me anyway, my gut bacteria died off entirely... I put a lot of sweetener in my tea and coffee, and drinking diet soda's. Oops. Some capsules with bacteria and lots of sauerkraut got that back on track. Should fibres have been the problem though, just adding in above ground veggies could sort that out. Or put a little extra fibre (psyllium husk?) in some full fat greek yoghurt or something. There's solutions to everything.Yes, I did try low carb a while ago and lost weight, which was great, but got horribly constipated! But that was the Atkins diet and as far as I remember, no veg was allowed. So I'm keen to try again. My current intake is dire - lots of biscuits and Christmas cake ( a whole one all to myself - no-one else likes it!! ). Got to change. Some great ideas and inspiration on these forums - thank you all!
