Your mother in law is quite right Etty. We din't call it low carb but that is wha it was. And the obviously very sugary things. there were lots of fad diets around of course, but it was fgenerally accepted that the most reliable way to lose weight was o cut out the bread and potatoes.
Always the easiest too as you say- eat the same meals as everyone else otherwise.
It was much later when the cutting out fats and low fat became popular.
