Dieting During Pregnancy

Almost all medical experts condemn dieting during pregnancy. That’s because dieting can affect the quality of nutrition a baby receives. However, obese women have traditionally been encouraged to lose some weight or at least maintain their weight while pregnant. Is this wise advice?

There is evidence that very overweight women have more difficult deliveries and their babies tend to have difficulties too. ( google that one)
A truly healthy diet, one rich in nutrients and low in empty calories, should be good in pregnacy. The pregnant body tends to store fat, in preparation for lactation. Feeding a baby takes an xtra 3000 calories or so per day.

Personally, I believe that a good healthy and balanced diet if perfect when pregnant - totally agree with Hanadr regarding nutrients and empty calories. If you can keep youself healthy, then the baby will take what it needs from you, and in all likelyhood you will maintain or reduce your weight during your pregnancy. This is certainly what my OB recommended to my when PG, and certainly none of this 'eating for 2' mullarkey.

You do need to be aware of your calorie intake during breast feeding, however if you consume an additional 3000 per day you will wind up the size of a small village (Sorry Hanadr). 400-500 extra per day should not only maintain your milk supply, but should also set you on the right road for losing additional weight (within reason) post natally.

Hi Viv
I meant that lactation uses up up to about 3000 extra calories, not that anyone should eat that many.
That's why many pregnant women gain weight, so they have a store to lose
