Had my dietitian appointment today and was pleasantly surprised. She started by asking what I eat, so I told her that I very recently managed to change my eating in both quality and quantity. I listed the things that I eat on a typical day (veggies, meat, fish, eggs - details in the What Did You Eat Today thread), and she was quite impressed. She asked me if I eat pasta or rice, and I explained that they are triggering foods for me: I cannot eat small/reasonable quantities, and I feel hungry soon after. That is how I feel about all starchy carbs, actually! I described my earlier disordered eating pattern which brought me to BMI of almost 40, and which included lots and lots of pasta, bread, pastries and rice. She wondered if it was the diagnosis of diabetes that helped me turn my eating around, and it was not. It gave me a push, by all means, but for a good while I felt unable to do what I knew I "should". It took reading Gillian Riley's book "Eating Less" to help me move on from addictive overeating.
Then she weighed me, and yes, I have lost a few kilos, which must have convinced her that I was not lying about my food intake!
She was very excited and complimentary about it, and I had to stress to her that I have changed my eating for health reasons, not for weight loss per se (another of Riley's tools that is helpful for me).
So at the end of the appointment, she advised me to continue as I've started, and to add some starches when I feel able to, for the sake of balance! I agreed, thinking of occasional pumpkin or sweet potato portion.
The funniest thing (or sad, if you think about it), she gave me a leaflet about healthy eating for diabetes. OK, it was produced in 2004; but it contains such howlers as "Starchy foods should be eaten at each meal. This is important for good blood sugar control."!!! No comment.
