Today I took my daughter to see one of our GP’s. She has had a cough and cold for a few weeks. Occasional temperature etc. I just picked the first available GP. He checked her over etc etc. And then, as I was there I decided to ask him if he was an LCHF sort of guy.

At first the response sounded promising but after agreeing it was good, started to bring “good” carbohydrates into the conversation \ consultation. He also thought too much protein would be hard on the kidneys and that too much fat (including dairy fats) would potentially be harmful.

He again gave LCHF his approval and stated that the idea is to lose weight and free the pancreas from fat deposits.

It sort of sounds as though he is hedging his bets rather than really endorsing LCHF.

I'd guess that he can't explain how well some of his patients have done, or why, eating low carb, but once he thought about it brought out the accepted dogma as that is what he has been told is correct.

Hey, that's significantly better then what a lot of them would have you believe.... the last line that is.

Interestingly although my GPs and DN comment on how well controlled my BS is none of them have asked how I’ve managed to achieve it!

The more GPs I listen to, the more each and every one of them has their own often differing opinion on the topic.

However one element of commonality amongst 3 GPs at my surgery is to be wary of too much fat.

Yep me too. Amazed, confused but not in the least bit curious. Such a shame as they gave so much they could learn and help other patients with.

I had to go to another GP in the practise I go to, as my GP is on holiday as one of medications had been recalled and had to get a substitute.

The only available GP available on a Saturday is a palliative care doctor at the practise and pretty friendly as well, as she looked through my records she commented about the T2 and coming off of Metformin that I had done a great job of controlling it.

She never blinked when I said I ate low carb high fat food. She did make a note though, I could not read her writing but I will ask Sunny when he cones back what she wrote down.

I got a substitute for the Ranitidine with another similar capsule called Nizac 300mg, which will protect my guts from the anti inflammatory's and anti coagulant medication I take as well.

I think this is such a shame. You would have thought that they would have been very interested to hear exactly how you had managed it.

Obviously, you have simply been following their professional advice

Of course - don’t we all! My DN comments on my cholesterol figures and the need to eat low fat milk, cheese, yoghurts, lean meat etc but we don’t have the statin talk anymore because my GP has annotated on my notes that I am ‘statin intolerant’!

Anyhow, I did put it to him that unlike previous years I myself had been free of coughs and colds and posed the question, could that be down to my diet? He didn’t really answer that one.

Prior to the appointment I had tried to book my next suite of blood tests. That caused havoc amongst the receptionists but mainly because they didn’t do the obvious thing and read my notes from previous diabetes / bp related appointments. Ultimately sense prevailed and I managed to make the booking.

I also noticed the two Diabetes.co.uk posters were still in prime position on the main surgery noticeboard, and had been in place for 6 weeks now.
