Different readings in the morning - should I be concerned?

Good morning everyone,

I have recently noticed that more often than not, my fasting reading is 6.3 - I am usually 5 or under. My readings through out the day are always lower than this. I experimented to see what would happen if I had breakfast later and every half hour they rose to about a peak of 8 and then came back down to around 5 - without eating anything! This I have found baffling, should I be worried about this and is there anything I can do to improve this please? I have tried having a slice of burgen toast and peanut butter at bed time or a chunk of cheese and a pickled onion - no change.

Thank you in advance,

Hi there

No - you shouldn't be worried! Non-diabetics blood sugar levels go up and down a bit too:

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html

Blood sugar levels in T1 are often a bit higher in the mornings due to the increased release of growth hormone and cortisol in the early morning hours which cause more glucose to be released into the blood.

In Type 2 excess fat is released from the abdomen during the night and adds to existing insulin resistance which causes the liver to increase glucose production.

In either case, a BG of 6 is still within normal / safe / non-diabetic range.

Hope this helps

6.3 is in the prediabetic range. If you have any weight to lose (no offense) lose it now. Exercise. If you see an upward trend, nip it in the bud. 8 is outside the normal range of 4-7 I this was just a sudden 'blip' then it might not be anything to worry about. Could be something to do with what you ate though some people insist a truly normal person will never go over 7

You're definitely not full blown but could be the start of something. I'm assuming you're testing because you have risk factors? Or are you following a diet? A lot of people on Paleohacks experiment with their blood sugar. If you're really worried see your GP. I'm seeing mine after months of harassing them soon.. Better safe than sorry. Good luck.

Thank you both for your replies. Last night, I tried a different approach, had a low carb salad and strawberries and cream with cinnamon for tea, 1 glass of red wine and then my slice of Burgen and peanut butter for supper. At bedtime I was 5.3 and this morning 5.4. Much much happier with those results! Must have done something right so will be doing that again!

Thanks for the encouragement and I wish you well too.
