Type 2 Difficulty getting a balance

The 5.9 is good. The 10.3 at 1 hour is not good, and you need to test again at 2 hours. Some meals peak at 1 hour, others at 2hrs and others even later.

Write down exactly what you ate and how much alongside the readings and keep a strict diary. This will teach you what foods you can cope with and which you need to either ditch completely or reduce portions.
You should be aiming for under 7.8 . I'm not there yet with some meals. My average after meal readings is 8, but I'm getting there! It is all trial and error.
Double figures are definitely not good.

Well done on getting the meter.

I should add, these are the NICE guidelines.

Non diabetic before meals 4 to 5.9, 2hrs after under 7.8
Type 2's before meals 4 to 7, 2hrs after under 8.5

However, these are generous guidelines. The lower the better.

before eating (pre-prandial) is ok. The one hour is not great that and is a largish spike but more important is the 2 hour after eating test. You need this to be under 7 ideally but under 8 will be a good starting point

Thank you. Will start a diary. Think probably miss the three new potatoes I had would have helped.

Hello and welcome ,
Still very early days when you are still in shock....and everything might feel just a bit overwhelming ...

It might be worth talking to your gp practice ...maybe get a referral to see a dietitian who maybe able to help you, some can.

There are quite a few veggies on this forum , worth checking out the threads , all very helpful, people .....

I am vegetarian, always have been , I was on a thread the other day on this site chatting to others who are also vegetarians .....
There is support here, but you sound like you need a few more medical answers yet, and then read and think about your diet and what you want to eat ......and keep asking questions and sharing always someone to help and support .....good luck ...

I am finding the forum really helpful and supportive.

Thank y

ou. I am still stabbing in the dark. Just seen from my phone app the pineapple I ate at lunch time had 19 g carbs which is way too high. Need to really get to grips with this. As a vegan I am used to eating fresh fruit and it's no good.

...Many of us are okay with berry fruits, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries etc...as for other fruits it varies, you'll find out by testing..

Try fewer potatoes next time - did you serve them with three bean salad? What did you use in that as pulses also have high carb levels so maybe not the best meal combination?

I find stewed rhubarb doesn't spike me and is lovely with a dollop of greek yoghurt and surprisingly. flaxseed, my new best friend.

Perhaps next time serve your bean salad with some roasted Mediterranean veg and a green salad instead. And have your spuds with something less carby.

Good idea. Am having it again tomoz and will try some roasted peppers with it. Great thank you.

Hi my wonderful helpers. This is my morning. Opinions would be good

Test on rising 7.9
Test after 3 mile run 8.3
Breakfast 218 calories in half slim fast milk shake with strawberries and soya yoghurt. Plus 2 small cups of coffee made with rice milk. Will test 1 hour after breakfast to see what that did. Thanks.

I think it might be the rice milk- check the carton but it seems to be loaded with carbs. May be better with an almond milk or soy milk as they are both much lower in carbs per 100g. Also check sugars on the slim fast shake- just because they are low cal doesn't make them low carb. I think it might be worth you trying to see a dietician given that your diet is already quite restrictive. They may have had experience of dealing with diabetic vegans before and might have useful tips/lists of good foods to share.
