On the latest email from Diabetes.co.uk, it explains about applying for Disability Living Allowance(DLA). I understood that this is being phased out to be replaced by a new cover all benefit which has stricter rules for qualification and a lower award, which from all publications by the Govt. and Social Security websites will give a still undisclosed amount. Even my MP has no idea what will happen to my benefits.
All these sites say is there will be provision for the needs of the most disabled people, but and its a big but, everyone will be encourage to get work, regardless of how severely disabled.
I do not see things getting better.

How can it get better with the nasty party in control.

I work for a govt dept here and they are trying to get more people into work here too and have toughened the disability pension rules. Although I've had plenty of conversations over the years with people who were being plain rude and nasty to me and saying lines like "you don't know what it's like to be diabetic and have injections everyday and oh I have hypertension too.... I'm very sick you know... you wouldn't know about that would you... don't make me mad.... I'm a very sick man as I have diabetes"..... that so ticks me off :x as professionally I'm not allowed to reply with "well x I also have diabetes and take 4 injections every day and and I also have 2 other chronic conditions, plus back and neck problems.... and oh yeah I'm on blood pressure meds too.... but I choose to work!" It makes my blood boil that some people can get away with being paid a benefit with less wrong with them than me. As my doctor has always said to me.... "you choose to work". Although I do empathise with those people who are incapacitated or simply can't get a job after trying so hard. But there's nothing like a "can do" attitude and giving it your best shot. :D

PS... this is just my experience and I know everyone is different with their views.

Hi Mep73,

Like you I did work in local Govt. often dealing with people who had less wrong with them then I had. But as my problems increased and then a allergic reaction that was life threatening, left me unable to carry on working.
I have gone to many job fairs, were I get sent to specialists in getting people back to work, and get told that I am to disabled to work. I wish I was able to work and earn, with fast rising costs not being met by benefits.

(((muffy)))) it's people like you that do need the help... but sadly there are a lot of people out there that aren't really incapacitated with their conditions they have and they can at least try and find some type of work... but simply don't want to do so. These are the people I have no empathy for. Also I find these are the people too who seem to have a lot of fight in them to stay on benefits.... as here they get the low income card and health care card as add ons which means they get all their medical costs drastically subsidised.... plus cheaper transport and other concessions. A lot of the time I think it's just that they don't want to lose the add ons to the benefit.... as the first complaint given when cancelled off a benefit is that they want to use their cards.
