Hi folks

Haven’t posted in a while but still here!

Had a cardiology appointment today … follow up from various tests I had at beginning of the year.

All good news on the heart front TG but I was disappointed with doctors attitude towards my diabetes T2. My last HBA1C was 49 and he couldn’t understand why I wasn’t on medication…. He repeatedly said that was a dangerously high number. While I know it is in diabetic range my own GP was happy for me not to be on meds as I had significantly reduced it it this on my own.

I’m due another test soon but my own testing at home is showing an estimated Hba1c of about 44.

Ive also got my cholesterol down to 5.3 again I know a bit higher than should be… he wanted to write to my Gp to advise need meds for diabetes and statins ASAP

Since beginning of year I’ve lost almost 4 stone, walking 5/6 days a week trying to eat as healthy as I can … with the odd fall of the wagon …. But I left the hospital today feeling deflated

A bit of encouragement from the medical professionals would go a long way …. Just to even acknowledge we are going in the right direction even if we have a bit more to do

Rant over ….

49 is not a greatly high number as far as I know but I am no Cardiologist, look on the main site on here as the upper level is 48 (To aim for) considering when I started before help mine was 129 (Hba1c). Very well done with the weight loss and exercise, walking is a great way to exercise (most weathers) This whole thing is not easy I think you have done fantastic

It’s difficult

My cardiologist has put it this way ‘almost no one dies from diabetes’ it’s always something else that has been complicated with diabetes heart and kidney issues being the big ones

An hba1c of 48 or more can be indicative of diabetes so I can see why they may want to stress the risks..

But the thing is your gp will have a clearer picture of your ongoing health condition…. If you do get a lower hba1c this time then well done, if not then discuss with them the options going forward

But one thing not worth doing is stressing over it

Don't let the cardiologist get you down. My nephrologist at hospital was pleased as punch that my HbA1c was down to 49. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I know my Hba1c, cholesterol and weight are all above where ideally they should be.

But all are a hell of a lot better than they were 12 months ago … so to me an acknowledgment that yes, while I still have a bit to go, well done on what I’ve achieved so far …. Would go along way.

Instead I walked away feeling Ive achieved nothing with all my hard work

Anyway I won’t let it bother me…. Onwards and upwards as they say.

Do not feel deflated by the attitude of the consultant.
You have done very well, and I suspect will continue to do so, as long as you don’t give up your methods used to reach the improved health. It is possible that with a bit more time you will achieve even better results by continuing whatever regime you have used to get to where you are now. Perhaps consider, with your GP, waiting a few more months to see how those results are. You are not obliged to take medication if you don't want to , but maybe make an informed decision following discussion with GP?
