Dizzy

I was diagnosed with diabetes last March.

Became dizzy on 750 Metformin and asked for Metformin slow release (now on 500x2 daily).

But I'm still dizzy at times and it seems to be getting worse.

My morning level is around 5.5 - go up to 8/9 after eating, BP is normal, I've lost weight slowly and so asking other members if they've had this problem and what have they done to solve it.

...I've read magnesium is one answer on another site - but has anyone tried it and does it work?

If you are getting dizzy all the time it is imperative that you discuss this ASAP with your GP. There are many causes of dizziness many of which are nothing to do with Diabetes.

You say your BP is normal - what do you call normal ?

Seeking information on the net is fine but that is no substitute for a proper investigation by your GP who will also be able to look at all your medication to see if there is a link there and will also have access to your Medical records. Get it checked out.

I'm afraid it's the other way around...

Immediately I started Metformin I started to become dizzy, on occasions. Not all the time obviously .... or I would have been in hospital!

I read about Metformin SR, on this site - so I asked the doctor if I could try it - it wasn't offered to me by the doctor when I mentioned the dizziness at first.

This was better but still I'm slightly dizzy sometimes. I'm a female pensioner.

Recent results: Hbalc 6.1, Pre breakfast 5.3, BP 128/88, Total cholestrol 4.73, Hdl 1.16, LDL 2.8, ACR 1.5. Apparently these are good results for someone my age.

According to the internet, dizziness looks like a consistent pattern for some people on Metformin.
I'm happy that this drug is readily available but wanted to know what to suggest to the doctor the next time I visit. Because unless I'm armed with some alternative the chances are I won't get one.

Can't help you then. If you are not happy with what your GP says get a second opinion. Like I said there are many causes of dizziness - not just a side effect of medication. It may well be the case but who knows without a proper investigation.

There are several alternatives to Met if you have a problem with it. Your GP should know them all. You shouldn't be the one suggesting them, he/she should be !

Thanks anyway - Saw my GP today asked the question.

The reponse: 'All drugs have side-effects you know'.

So basically put up with it, unless anyone has any other ideas.
