I got out of hospital around 2 and a half weeks ago after having DKA. I'm still finding now that doing things such as walking tires me out very easily and I have to take a lot of breaks or sit down to rest as my legs get tired and I get out of breath. My emotions are still a little all over the place and I get upset thinking about my experience in the hospital as at the time I was far away from home so it was difficult for anyone to come visit.

I'm just wondering how long does the recovery take for DKA before I'll be fully back to normal again?

Hi Nicola:)

I'm not sure on recovery times from DKA, but what I do know is that there are a lot of things that tend to go hand in hand with DKA, such as weight loss, dehydration, hyperglycemia, etc.

Your body will take time to repair itself from all of the above, and get used to having reasonably stable BG's again. That will just take some time. You may have lost a significant amount of muscle mass as well, so it'll maybe take a wee while for that to rebuild. I imagine that when that happens, you'll feel less fatigued.

Hope you're feeling better soon and a warm welcome to the forum:)

I'll second what people gave said above. I had it 9 years ago, and had the same after effects you speak of.

Your body has been through a heck of a lot - the high sugars/ketosis does a lot of damage to the body. Think it took me a good 6/7 weeks to start to feel normal again.
