Greetings! I just joined this forum and have already found some encouragement! Here's my question -I just had a bad blood sugar day -woke up with blood sugar over 300 saw my endocrinologist who tweaked my pump settings and sent me on my way -now it's 400. (I had called in sick to work as I felt ******!). When I left her office I had a tire that was badly in need of air so I had no choice but to go to tire place on my way home. I sat there for over 2 hrs while they finally looked at my tire and pulled out the nail and arched it. Now blood sugar is 520. I feel horrible. This is all after letting my pump use it's program to bolus to correct my sugars all day and it just goes up. Finally I get home and change my pump site pitch the insulin I had used before and opened a new one. Called my doc who wanted me to go to the ER but she consented to give me 2 hrs to see if it came down. It did as I kept testing and let the pump do the work. It ultimately crashed to 49. Ugh! Anyway that was 4 days ago. Sugars are good and steady. But I'm EXHAUSTED! Is this normal? I am going to check for ketones today but now kind of wishing I wasn't so stubborn and gone to the ER. Is exhaustion normal? Because I'm thinking I might have been in DKA but was able to correct at least the sugars.

Not a pump user, but just a random thought, I had a bit of lipohypertrophy going at the sides of my stomach which affects absorption, so moved to my stomach to let the lipo break down. Is there a soft fleshy mass like a bit of avocado under the cannula site? The high followed by the plummet to 49 kinda sounds like an absorption problem, lots of insulin inhibited from absorbing, then releases in one go.

Could be a hundred and one other things, I'm sure some pumpers will be along soon.

I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago after going in to DKA and ending up in hospital. My ketones were 5.2 on admission. I was sick for over 36 hours and felt very breathless. They told me at hospital to drink plenty of fluids to help flush ketones out of my system to help avoid any future problems. Maybe you feel exhausted as your blood sugar was so high for a few days and your body is recovering. I'm not an expert as I'm only 4 weeks in but fingers crossed for you!

Exhaustion can occur just from high BS for a couple of hours, but not after four days. Ketones could well explain that if they were high enough and you missed a lot of insulin, from experience it doesn't take long to develop when pumping and exhaustion and nausea are early first signs. What did your site look like when you changed it? I find it good policy to always do a ketones blood test when I have a set issue causing me to miss insulin with elevated BS. If you don't have one the Abbott glucometers that check ketones are affordable and provide accurate results and are a must have for pumpers IMHO.
