Hi all!
I wonder if anyone can help

Basically i had a blood test back in May at the hospital as i was experiencing some on the symtoms of Diabetes. My mother is type 2 and my sister is type 1 so they advised i went for one.

I went for it and it came back fine, since then i have always had it in the back of my mind that i may catch it becuase of my family having it. I went to my local Lloyds chemist for a fasting test just over a month ago and the result cameback as 4.2 and said i was fine. So i left it there.

Today i woke up feeling tired and thirsty so i had my breakfast (toast and tea) and my mother asked me if i wanted to use her test kit to see if my sugar was ok as i looked v pale. I tested my blood which was probally just under 1 hour from eating and it cameback as 4.3

Is this ok or do i need to go the hospital for another test, i am on antidepressents atm and have been suffering from anxiety. So this may be a reason of my tiredness etc.

Sorry for the long thread but some insight from a pro would be greatfull

Hi mac78,

Those numbers look completely normal and non-diabetic to me.

All the best,

fergus

hi,
as fergus says, those look fine, depression and anxiety and any meds can cause dry mouth ,tiredness etc
take care
totsy :D

Hey guys!

Do u think i should have done a fasting test to see if i could have got the numbers lower?
I just read on here also that test kits arnt accurate for detecting Diabetes. Now im scared and worried

These are as low as you should be!!any lower is considered Hypoglycaemia !
Antidepressants can cause dry mouth and tiredness, discuss this with your doctor the next time you see him/her.

Oooh really, i didnt realise

So im guessing they would have been higher after food if i was diabetic? also a fasting test wouldnt make any diffrence i guess

sorry for the dumb questions

Mac ,everyone's blood sugar levels (BS) go up after eating! The point is how quickly the BS returns to normal after eating. In a diabetic ,because of the problem metabolising carbohydrate this process takes while. In a non diabetic everything works OK and the BS is back to normal usually within 2 hours or less .The fact that you ate toast and tea (bread being a complex carb)and you BS was 4.3 an hour after means that your pancreas is working fine!!
Now.....go and find something else to worry about !!!!!

Seriously ,keep coming back if you want ,but I don't think you need worry about being diabetic.

Thanx Sue for your info, one more thing if u dont mind
My brother said that if i had toast it wouldnt have changed the score as it is a slow release carb or something?? and suggested i test again in the morning before i eat

does that make sense to anyone?

Yes that makes sense.Bread is a complex carb which means the carb is absorbed more slowly than simple sugars.Test first thing in the morning before you eat anything.

PS you're still not diabetic!

I know it seems like i want to be Diabetic and i dont mean to be a pain, but i am just a worry wort cos of my familys history.

I get up at 6am so will do a test before i eat breakfast or have a brew. Is there anything i need to do to get a clearer reading? exercise etc?

No.Just get up,wash hands and test.I'll make a bet it will be in the 4's.

Ok the scores are in,lol

I tested 1 hours after my evening meal last night also. The result was 4.7

This mornings fasting test was 4.2

So im guessing i dont need to test anymore for a good few months now as one of these would have been higher if i had Diabetes. I only worried cos i read here that u cant detect diabetes through these kits

Thank u very much Sue for all your help, i am going to hold off from going to the doctors for a hospital test as im sure something would have changed on these 3 if there was a concern. And just keep an eye on my blood every 6 months or so

Does that sound ok?
