Do Statins lower or raise BS levels ?

I am curious to know.

When I had the HBAIC that told me I was in the Pre D zone it was the first time in years that I had not been on my statins for high Cholesterol. The GP said that my C'Levels where no longer high enough to require statins and added that they can raise your sugar levels so now with the Pre D we best keep you off them.

I must admit at the time I thought it strange as I had blood tests (usually just fasting ) for 20 yrs whilst on them and never had issue with my BS then the first time I'm off them I get one.

I remember years ago when I first found out about my cholesterol that the specialist I saw at the time mentioned that I also had high triglyceride levels and asked if I drank a lot or like sugary drinks etc.

Are the two linked at all?

This link seems to suggest that it is. So as I have had high triglyceride levels for more than 20yrs should I go back and get put back on the statins???

As a T1, I can safely say that the introduction of Statins to my medication cupboard had no discernible impact on my blood sugar levels.

I am in no way advocating take statins or not take them ...but I got my weight down and then stopped my statins and ( didn't tell my doc' ) at my recent check up all my bs and other various tests they do we're all better than normal ... In fact my doc said " whatever your doing keep it up your results are excellent" im not saying this will work for everyone but lchf regime has and is working for me :))

not sure exactly what my trigs where,, I can check my last test from last year later when get home from work. Just remembered a doctor telling me that years ago and it being mentioned from time to time whilst I was in the RAF when they did my cholesterol checks.

I saw the old RAF GP a few months ago and asked him if I should be off the statins and it was his opinion that staying on them was preventative and that the new guidelines where just that guidelines and by the time they often decide on civvy street to put you on them the damage is done.

Never asked at the time about trigd or BS,,, I'm going back into forces and will be at the same Unit and therefore under his care again so wondering if its a good idea to be back on them

If it were me.. I would check my triglyceride level and then compare ....if it's in a good place at the mo' you have your answer :)

I am obviously wary about mentioning Pre D to them tho,,, but with more fats in my current diet I was planning on getting my cholesterol checked again anyway

yeh but they do lower trigs which according to some articles like the one I posted are linked.

Hope not really as all the exercise and weight loss im trying in that case will make no difference to me then ,,,as when I first got told my C and Trigs where high I was only 18 did pro street dancing ,,,could do back flips and weighed in at about 10 stone!!!! If it could still happen to me then I doubt I have much chance of reversing that now lol.

My BS went up when I was on statins and I was put onto Sitagliptin as well. As the statins made me ill I came off them and my BS levels dropped. I also stopped taking the Sitagliptin last August and 3 months later my latest hba1c is still quite low at 42 and my cholesterol has dropped from 5 to 4.3 (LDL is 2.3).

The leaflets enclosed with statins warns of the possibility of raised blood glucose levels in some people. It also says this on the manufacturers' websites.

All I can say is since following my low carb/high fat diet my cholesterol has greatly improved. My triglycerides have reduced from 2.01 to 0.58. My HDL has gone up from 1.56 to 2.2 and my LDL has dropped from 4.0 to 3.0. I eat vast amounts of eggs, cheese, mayo, butter, meat etc.

On my statin info it's says they can caused diabites and also put your blood sugars up !

I think that was my problem - I was diagnosed at 6.8 on one FBT (didn't know about hba1c at the time so not sure if this was done) and managed to reduce it due to diet but my cholesterol was 5.5 and, with the usual mantra of ''diabetics need to have cholesterol levels of under 4'', i was put onto statins. Whilst my cholesterol reduced to 3 my BS went up to 7.2 and I was put onto Sitagliptin. When I came off of statins due to other problems my hba1c dropped to 40 and the DN said that it was probably the statins and I came off the Sitagliptin in August. My cholesterol is now 4.2 and hba1c 42 with diet only!

I did point that out to the DN I had at the time my BS went up and she told me not to believe everything I read in the newspapers - her face was a picture when I told her I read it from the drug company's own website!!
