Do you give in to cravings?

Having ridiculous cravings for tahini since going low carb - could literally eat half a jar in one go!! It's not every night, but on the nights (like tonight!) it happens its really hard to resist! Have no idea why - I checked the carbs and even half a jar would only be about 3g carbs so its not that I'm craving...

Does anyone else have slightly odd cravings like this, and if so, if its not high carb do you resist or go with it...?

I'm a bit worried I'm gonna turn into a jar of tahini at this rate!! :-D

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

I don't know what tahini is, but I think it might have been an ingredient for one of my meals. I couldn't buy it locally so I left it out. My own craving used to be chocolate, fairly standard craving that I managed to lose. My main surprise was to be able to give up biscuits, even 1 a day might have been enough but then 1 turns into 2 turns into.... I still look at the biscuit jar when I get a biscuit for a friend and I wonder if I have actually lost the craving or if it will return. Today, for the first time I can remember since becoming diabetic nearly 8 years ago, I wanted, no, wanted is the wrong word, I longed for the days when I could eat what I wanted when I wanted. Binging on my special mix of a bag of chocolate peanuts mixed up with a bag of chocolate raisins. To sit with a dear friend and drink a bottle of Tia Maria between us. Christmas morning when I would always be given a very, very large container of sherbet flying saucers, and eat them all before lunch! 200 flying saucers! I can't even look at one now. My fantasies flit between women, vintage cars and biscuits. Now, if I could find a woman with her own biscuit factory and a private car collection I would be a happy man. But I wouldn't live long.

No, I don't give in to cravings, at least I haven't in the three weeks since diagnosis. - I really crave cup cakes! Haven't eaten one in over two years though, as I can't eat gluten! Sooooo not fair! I think maybe wanting something really sweet is a sign that your diabetic?? - I can remember, before my mum was diagnosed, my dad driving around looking for an all night petrol station to get her a chocolate bar. - there wasn't much open at night, 20 yrs ago in rural Wales!

- I had a cook book for Christmas with lots of dishes that needed tahini in or over them. I made a few for a family New Years party and ended up putting the tahini out separately coz I hated it so much (after 2 days looking for it!) - no one else ate it either! Can I ask where you get yours from? Maybe I got the wrong one??!

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

I had a powerful craving for peanut butter for a good while after diagnosis, but I seem to be over it now.

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

It depends what the craving is, if it's a bag of sweets no I don't lol, because I know it will have drastic effects to my levels etc, though if it was something low carb like PB, a burger, chicken etc definitely!

The one I have is called cypressa light tahini - it's just from Sainsburys and I think most bigger supermarkets will stock it, though its often in with 'world foods'.

I should have said 'do you give into cravings that don't affect your blood sugar' - I do (although much less so) have cravings for sweet treats from time to time but wouldn't give into them most of the time; I was just curious if any of you have cravings for odd things that are "diabetic friendly" and if so, whether you just go with them... I maybe didn't clarify it not including cakes/chocs/high sugar/high carb things :-)

I was nuts for hummus pre diagnosis but the chickpeas are too carby for me now so maybe I'm craving the tahini part instead?!

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

PS Irw60; tahini is ground sesame seeds - sort of like peanut butter, but made from sesame seeds instead of peanuts :-)

It's very low carb, no sugar... But it's very high in fat though, which is why I'm wary of just chompsing it down...

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

I'll try that one, if I can find it, thank you. The one I ended up with just says tahini on it. It's a sainsburys one but it really isn't nice. - check out the cook book - "Jerusalem". Off the top of my head I couldn't tell you how low carb it is but I know that a lot of the recipes are Primal ( my Primal nut brother gave it to me!) so they shouldn't be bad.

Hmm, BG friendly cravings. - I love cheese. All cheese. ANY cheese. - especially Y Fenni and Carmarthenshire Blue. Haven't eaten any since diagnosis coz I'm trying to bump myself off a weight loss plateau. Love it wrapped in lettuce.

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

Thanks for the cook book tip! If its primal its pretty likely to be low carb!

Some tahini's are bitter: I'm not sure why... This one isn't though - its really creamy - hence why I can't stop eating it ;-)

If you follow primal then cheese is a bit of a no no isn't it... Though some say certain cheese / dairy better than others... Dairy is an odd one for me - sometimes it seems to cause spikes for me but I still can't seem to figure out which stuff does what - still experimenting with that one!

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

Cheese would be the reason Davey could never get me to go completely primal, although it isn't totally banned.

I'll look out for that tahini, thanks. - the one I bought could definitely NOT be described as creamy!!! :)

Re: Do you give in to cravings?

I had a very strong memory today of something I used to eat as a child. When I was very young my breakfast was a cup of tea and hot buttered toast. I would then roll the toast up and dip it in the hot tea. Absolutly scrumptious or what!?!? Every now and then I do get a craving for it, but I haven't got the nerve to do it! I mean, hot buttered toast dipped in tea. The worst part of the whole process was trying to drink tea that had a thick layer of butter floating on top and laying in the bottom of the cup. Perhaps not a craving I should give in to. But if any of you do please let me know.
