Hi I'm a type one so haven't posted in this bit before. I'm giving one of my bg testers with strips to my husbands friend who is a type 2. He's 64 and is trying to get a better handle on things of course the best way to do that is to be able to know what's going on. When I was talking to him however he said that he had put on quite a bit of weight as he had to eat more often in order to take his diabetic medication. I was thinking this was a bit odd, does anyone else have to eat more and often because of the tablet medication they take? I don't know yet which type of tablets he takes, but I imagined as he wasn't injecting insulin he should be trying to cut his calories and carbs and not increase them any thoughts?

Tell him to speak to his doctor about it.

Without knowing what he's on, or how often, any advice could be totally incorrect,

My tablets should be taken with food, but only as they can cause an upset stomach, so food helps me avoid this,
But I only take them once a day.

This may not apply to others though, so he needs to ask.

I can't think of any reason why a Type 2 would need to eat more food? If someone is taking a sulphonylurea such as Gliclazide and causing low blood sugar then the solution is to reduce that medication. Tablets such as Metformin are supposed to be taken with a meal but that's all. I think your husband's friend needs to check with his GP and if he doesn't get a sensible explanation then go to another GP

I eat more regularly now I'm on 1x850 metformin 3 times a day, but I'm eating better rather than snacking on rubbish so I'm actually losing weight. I do find it more difficult at weekends
