Hello all for the past few mornings my blood sugar levels have been high at fasting ranging from 12.6- 14. Would this explain why I'm thirsty and have a sweet taste in my mouth.

Hi,

I'd say yes you do need to see your GP.
High blood sugars would explain a heavy thirst & the "pear drop" taste/odour in the mouth/breath...

Yes.
Do your readings drop later in the day?
And are you tracking them around food?

Hope the appt goes well. Please let us know how you get on. :)

Definitely yes.

Are you on any medication? Have you reduced your carb intake at all since this started? Mine used to be similar before I started a low carb diet.

Yes go back and see your GP Take a note of your readings

Thank you all I have another hba1c booked for next week to see if my level has gone up.

Definitely yes.

Are you on any medication? Have you reduced your carb intake at all since this started? Mine used to be similar before I started a low carb diet.

No not on any medication. On the low carb program since being diagnosed in march :)

Are you feeling ill in any way? Under stress???

(Sorry for all the way questions but it's unusual for someone established on LC to just start getting high numbers like that).

Hi at that level of sugars you need to at least be having a low-carb diet and almost certainly be on Metformin. Do discuss going onto Metformin with the GP. Although the Metformin will help a bit, the low-carb diet will be the key.

Yes and yes. Definitely go and see your doctor. I found exercise helps reduce blood sugars too.

Can you spend 23hr fasting, e.g. just drink water between the evening meal one day and the next day? This may brink down the BG levels. (Not to be done if someone is on drugs/insulin without thinking about the drugs first!)

Some people find that 5:2 works well on top of their low carb, e.g fast for two non-consecutive days.

And as everyone else is saying see your GP and consider going on Metformin, if you GP thinks you need something else as well as Metformin talk to him/her about Forxiga as unlike most drugs (apart form Metformin) used for Type2 it does not make insulin resistance worse.

Assuming you have already got your carbs down to below 40g a day, reducing protein and hence increasing fat (olives, oily fish etc) may also work.
