Doctors refuse to help, because HBa1c is normal, but at home I've found decisive evidence of hypos

My doctor is determined to turn me away from further diabetes investigations because my HBa1c average was just within the normal range. However from my home Accu Chek Performa Nano monitor, I can decisively prove that something is very wrong with me postprandially.

- Fasting blood glucose is perfectly fine, ranging from. 4.7 - 5.7 each morning.

- After 2 hours of eating, my blood sugar usually ends up back to normal or low. However sometimes it plummets into hypoglycemia ranges, as low as 2.9, with very uncomfortable symptoms.

- After 2.5-4 hours, my blood sugar suddenly shoots up to 9-10 mmol or higher, making me restless, thirsty and suchlike. There's no doubt these are diabetic numbers for their time, especially as I'm only eating something simple like a small bowl of weetabix.

We need to find a root cause of my other chest troubles, and seeing a 2.9 sugar reading get totally ignored has convinced me the docs want nothing more to do with my investigations. I just can't seem to convince them that such extreme values after meals are of concern because I can't figure out why they're happening

Hi @FruitLion and welcome to the forum.

Obviously because of forum rules, we cannot diagnose you, but the first thing I would like to ask is, what symptoms do you have, because the readings you are posting are in normal levels, except for the hypo post prandial?

Next what dietary advice have you had?

There is a sub forum on hypoglycaemia named reactive hypoglycaemia, on this site, it will let you discover similar conditions which Hypoglycaemia occurs.

The last advice is to find a doctor that will know about Hypoglycaemia, particularly a specialist endocrinologist endocrinologist who has experience with conditions such as RH.

When I eat certain foods such as weetabix, I would get similar readings as you do.
Other than the chest issues, are you on any meds that could effect your blood sugar levels?

Keep safe

Thank you for the reply - currently not on any medications .

When my numbers are low I feel sweaty, cold, my heart pounds and my vision goes. I feel restless and my thoughts race. I can occasionally gasp for air.

When the numbers are high, my head starts to ache, I get thirsty, I feel indigestion like pain too. Also I can never gain weight, no matter what I eat. I suspect this condition is behind that. I get palpitations, very tired and my thoughts race in a different manner.

These symptoms are typically hypoglycaemic fluctuating blood glucose levels.

There is a list of so many different symptoms in the sticky thread about reactive hypoglycaemia, some you probably have not even recognised.

Keep safe

I would do as much as possible to have the maximum amount of information to hand such as:
  1. Everything within the meals eaten including spices
  2. How many meals and timing including snacks
  3. Drinks
  4. Sleep / Wake times
  5. Exercise - what type how long
  6. Detail life stresses
If you can keep these in a spreadsheet it might hold keys to unlock if there is a lifestyle element that can assist professional assessment.

HbA1c is not the be all and end all as your testing shows. Don't stop until someone sees you and you are satisfied. It might be worth asking for a 2 week Libre test with your practices Diabetic Nurse remotely monitoring, you can do loads of tests, document foods and activity with corresponding notes. I have taken 30 readings today up to 15.00 with notes around my brunch and exercise.
