Not to sure what to think, personally i think the Gliclazide(80mg twice a day) is doing me any good,i was all ready on Metformin(850mg twice a day),still on Metformin but since i've been on the Gliclazide as well my weight loss stoped and my bg is between 10,5 - 7.6 and following a low carb diet for last 3 weeks. When i saw the doc today i showed her the test results as i have wrote them down to show her,she said with the results i've been getting i've got to go back to my (old school) diabetic nurse,i'm due to have my 3 monthly blood tests again in May and i've got a feeling she's going to make me wait till them results to do any thing about it,as my Nan was a diabetic type 1 i think that i might be as well.I've run out of Gliclazide (chemist error)for tonight and i can't get any more till tomorrow morning so it will be interesting to see what my bloods read tonight to see if the Gliclazide did make any differance, comments very welcome, shan x

Hi shandromeda
I'm sure there are many more knowledgeable people on here better than me. What I do know is if you are on a strict low carb diet that could be part of the problem. I too am on Met and Glic 2x daily. The advice for someone on Glic is that they stick to a low fat and low carb diet to maintain it's full effectiveness. This was rammed home to me when I first went on it. It is rare for Glic to have any effect on weight.
you don't say how long you have been taking the Glic?

Hi Cugila, been eating a low fat,low carb diet as i don't really like the taste of fats much like tonight i had mushrooms and cod not fried,i've been on the Gliclazide for two months now and start the next months tomorrow, shan x

All that sounds good but I think you need to give it a bit more time to build up in your system. My BG's didn't start dropping for some time after I went on it. By all means monitor your readings but it is the overall effect with your correct diet which should help to improve things.
Stick with it.

Well i've just tested my bg two hours after my meal of the cod and mushrooms and it was 9.7 and thats with out the Glicazide (chemist error) but with my usuall metformin and the reading is about the same as when i do take it,i'm going to have the same dinner tomorrow after i get my Glicazide and see what the differance is,shan x :?:

Hi shan

One thing I neglected to mention is that the effect of Glic is dependent on when you take it. I always take mine about half an hour before food and this seems to work fine for me. The usual onset of effect is supposed to be within an hour of taking it.
One other thing is to also see what your BG is before a meal as well.

If later you still think it's doing nothing you may get the dose increased . I was taking 2 AM and 1 PM until my BG's came down then reduced to 1 AM & PM. it's all about adjusting the dose for the best effect.

Ken

You may like to look at this thread which may be relevant ?? Gliclazide failure?

Thanks Ken,i've all ways took all mine with my food i'll try taking it half an hour before,i'll give any advice a go thanks again, shan x

Gliclazide makes the pancreas produce insulin whether or not there is any carbohydrate present. Metformin works to overome insulin resistance. As insulin regulates how the Glucose is disposed of either to the muscles as energy or stored as fat, then high levels will stop the body using its store of fat and rely on what is in the blood stream.

Fergus has posted on this.

You can still increase your metformin to 3x850 mg, for some people they need the maximum dose. Get a better handle on the insulin resistance and you may not need the glic. Just a thought.

cugilla ...... As trink says tackle the IR and the need for Glic is much reduced. From my own experience dropping 3.5st and a 30 min walk daily means i dont take the stuff anymore.

Good luck

fantastic Dave. I wish I could say the same. I'm just getting it reduced. It's a start.
Cheers
