Dodgy Toenail?

Hi there

I wanted to ask if anyone has had aproblem with their toenail? It's on my big toe on the right foot. It looks like blood under the nail and its been there for about 3months. I haven't had any injury or trauma to the nail and it has never hurt. The blood area is on the right side of my nail and covers about 75%. I saw a GP in january and she said it could be fungal and to go back in 3 weeks,well it was 5 weeks before I saw her again and she said I was to take a toenail clipping and it would be tested at the hospital, but apparantley it can take weeks. I now have an appointment with a Dematologist tomorrow at noon in a new 'One stop 'clinic. Even minor operations can be carried out and everything is done there on that day with no follow ups. As I don't drive and if I need any 'minor surgery' would I be ok to walk and bus back home.

It probably is fungal, it just stays there and does nothing. So has anyone had medication or treatment for a possible fungal toenail or something similar? I just don't like the idea of a Doctor proding, probing and poking :o god what a load of P's.

What I should advise is that you self refer to your local podiatry department. Check your hospital's web site for the number. However I always try things on my own and ignore anything saying it's not for diabetics. The most effective antifungal I've found is "Lamisil" It usually takes a single application to work. Even so the discolouration will have to grow out, which will take months.
You could try shining a UV light on the nail. Fungi often fluoresce in UV!

Thanks handr, I never thought of shining a light on it, only used a large magnifying glass, weeks ago. Not sure if I have a UV light in the house, any ideas?????? But to be honest my tummy has been playing up in the last hour, bathroom 3 times,,and some discomfort in the groin area ,so I hope I am ok as I want to get it over and done with tomorrow. Never had a fungal infection under the nail although I did use to get Athlete Foot a few years ago. I had my big toe nails surgically removed as they were starting to grow inwards, rather painful at the time but one of the best decisions I've made, hope they sort it out tomorrow RRB and you recover well :thumbup:
 
Hi I'm back from my appointment. The Dr thinks its nothing sinister and it looks like a bruise,it may take up to 9 months to grow out. She took a close up photo of my naila nd put it in my file. My toenail clipping came back as non fungal, so the Dr said she shouldn't need to see me again . I'm very happy with that and thank you for your replies :)

How old are you Spacey?? All nails change as we age and toe nails will get harder and thicker the older we get. This is why those of us with diabetes need to take extra care of our feet and nails, because any reduction in feeling and we could damage a foot and not realise it until next looking.
