I don't drink much at all (I'm talking about three or four times a year). Yesterday I had a gin and tonic with my tea ... I measured the gin ... 1 standard measure. Had penang chicken from M&S (8.5g of carbs) and two spoons of brown basmati rice (i don't usually do well with rice) and half a spring roll. 2 squares of 85% chocolate afterwards. sugar 2 hours later 5.0. Seemed way too good to be true ... I stopped metformin about 3 weeks ago so readings have been a bit higher. Did the gin make the difference??!

I believe some tonic waters contain quinine, Not to sure if this may be the reason for your readings.

Your meal comes across really nice and with the gin and tonic, makes it all a pleasant choice. "Nice one".

Sounds good, Disneyfan. Alcohol does discourage the liver from churning out glucose; I find a definite relationship between glasses of red wine in the evening and lower BG readings later and the following morning. It's true that alcohol itself is a carbohydrate, but its effect on the liver seems to outweigh that.

One Gin = 1 unit of alcohol would not be enough to fill your liver and stop it regulating the glucose in your blood so I would doubt it would have had much effect at all.

I thought it is only when the liver is saturated with alcohol that it stops controlling the release of glucose, at least that is my understanding. But I suppose even I unit may have some effect. Interesting subject
