Maybe this has been posted before, not sure. I'm type1 have been for 30+ years. And I've been questioning my diabetes (stupid I know). But does any one question their diabetes?? I went through the why me, when I was younger. Maybe some know this feeling, some maybe not. I will admit I cheated as I wanted to be like everyone else(first time admitted, to that  ). But I'm having real probs, with no help from hosp, on pump waiting list constant highs leading to lows and really fed up, new consult wants to reapeat past 15years of treatment, still waiting for a katie course and still waiting for a place, eating the same diet, week in week out, don't go out that often to eat, if at all. And I've wondered do people ask their diabetes, questions, such as what do you want me to do, I'm trying my best, but your not helping. I know this prob really sounds stupid, I am really trying my best but no one really wants to help me by the look of it, on a medical issue or a mental issue, my kids race to to get lucozade and a snickers bar, they try to beat each other to get to mum first. EG tested twice 1.9, lucozade and half an areo, went to sleep due to headache, son put blanket and pillow out for me. Woke up at 6.18, with wet tshirt tested again 3.4, thought **** came to really quickly as kids needed tea, now in the 20s, I'm really fed up with this roller coaster. Never been told that monthly's affect bs, even thou DSN, have been through my 2 pregnacy's I've found out, also not to exercise with a blood sugar over 13.Hubby goes to work constantly worried, and kids schools know, if they are late in, I've had a hypo and they, will be in once I'm sorted. And NONE OF MY CONSULTANTS, have ever considered basal testing, I FEEL LIKE I'M BANGING MY HEAD AGAINST A BRICK WAL,!!! Sorry for the rant. :(

Hi

Although Ive now got a pump which helps keep my bg levels more on a level plain (most of time that is), one of the key things that I needed to do first before I even got the pump, was to make sure that my morning bg level on waking was no lower than 7mmol (strict instructions from D consultant to either eat some carb before going to bed or to decrease basal) and then to use the 7mmol as my target to correct to when figuring out my insulin to carb ratios) and to allow my bg level to rise to 10mmol 2hrs later (not correcting) and then to wait another 2hrs to enable my bg levels to fall back. If my bg levels for my next meal were above 7mmol before eating, again just correct back to 7mmol and then do insulin to carb ratio bolus. If they were a bit lower, just eat 1-2 glucose tabs/jelly babies etc first and then do the bolus.

Are you using ratios at all and if so can you not alter them by doing frequent bg tests and use the results to tell you what to do. I swear the best thing I ever did for myself was test my bg levels every 2 to 2.5hrs and use the results to figure out whether I needed to eat some carb or could just leave things be...

Even if you get a pump, it will only work out ok for you if you can use ratios ok.....

Thanks IHS, no one has ever told me me how to adjust basal, and how to do fasting basal and bolsus all though I work on the 10g to 2 units ratio, I'm still waiting on a katie and nearly a year now waiting, but I now have a job that depends on me driving.

2u for 10g carb is the same as 1u for 5g carb. If the ratio 1u for 5g is resulting in you going low 2hrs after eating, try altering it the next day to 1u for 8g which is more or less an inbetween. If you still going low try using 1u for 10g or 1u for 11 or 12 etc. Keep bg testing and keep altering the ratios until your bg levels start to behave themselves

Try for a while to keep all your meals the same amount of carb and avoid food that is low GI as it can start to get muddly at first until you find your way. Its easier then to work out ratios... They will differ though at each main meal time.
You seem to be waiting an awful long time for the carb counting Katie course to become available................ Have you got the book Think Like A Pancreas, as I think it explains carb counting a bit better maybe than what Ive tried to explain it?

Yes I do IHS, plus the pumping one as well. I'll sort out think like, to read at work, while I'm waiting to pick up the lunch trays, when I've dropped them of. The school don't mind if I sit and wait in there car park, so I'll put it in the side door picket, should be through it in a few weeks. I seem to be teaching myself the new way, with hit and miss as no one at my care trust, gives old diabetics the new info :(

Thanks IHS, don't know what I'd do with out you :D

Sounds like you are getting night hypo's which may be down to your basal injection. Eating a snack before bed may help but, if it was me going down that low I would be thinking of
1) lowering basal dose
2) possibly changing the tiime of dosing.

If it were me I would lower the basal dose and do 3 nights of testing at 3am and 6am. I would do that for 3 nights before I considered the next action to take depending on the results.

I personally for myself prefer to get my night levels right first, but thats because it makes the rest of the day easier to manage if you wake up within limits without possibly rebounding from any night hypo's.
