Does being diabetic get you down?

hi Kayla , i have been diabetic for 35 years , iam on a pump and am well controlled , i was diagnosed with depression in 1995 and take meds for it which is great , my consultant says their is a link between diabetes and depression , might be worth having a chat with yours lovey . dont let diabetes control your life i never have and never will . good luck xx

Yes I do get down, but in addition from diabetes type 1 (had cysts removed from pancreas causing shrinkage and damage which caused diabetes) I also suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and under active thyroid, so I feel I am under constant attack.i have no support from my husband and family re. The diabetes and have brought my levels to quite good levels myself with no understanding from them so I do feel quite alone. The thing is there is no visual sign of diabetes or the under active thyroid come to that, whereas my arthritis is there for all to see cos I am very disabled now. I am 64 years old. Life with my body is a battleground and I feel quite depressed because coping is all down to me.

Hello, all you can do is your best, your best in your work and Diabeties, i have been a diabetic for 26 years and only now fully understanding it. When i first found out you were just told this is what you do now go home and do it, but now i have found that there is help out there, the nurses are a GREAT help and doctors. Keeping to a good diet to keep the sugar levels balanced isnt easy but i find my mood is better i can cope with work life much better and i dont feel as tired. Hope this helps good luck and smile you never know someone might smile back :D

It has recently, not when I was first diagnosed in October, but it hit home that I'm only 40 & have it for the rest of my life.
A few years ago I was diagnosed with CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) & when I started taking Metformin & got my bloods down I physically felt so much better, for the last year diabetes & CFS were making me feel rotten, but I didn't realise I was diabetic.
My friend told me to take it a day at a time rather than looking ahead for the next 40-50 years as it may be easier to handle, and I think that may be the way forward.
I also try to lighten my mood with a bit of humour about it too......for instance for lent I'm giving up chocolate.......!!

Hi my name is Ashley, I am nearly 18 years old. I have been type one diabetic since I was 2 (16 years!) I have been feel depressed the past few months. and I must say it doesn't get easier, I have had it for 16 years, I mean that's a long time when im thinking of how long I still have left to live! I have sore legs from injections which bleed, bruise and cause lumps, I have high protein in my urine and my eyes are slightly changing, it has took me all this time for it to actually sink in that I have got this for life! it is not going to away... if my legs are a mess now what on earth are they going to look like in lets say 10years time! and the worsted thing is, people do not understand what we go through daily and say aw its just a few injections a day, they save your life... yeah they do but they hurt! its even worse when they say you cant have sugar your a diabetic!! yes we can have sweets and food as long as we do insulin! my point is that it will never get easier and depression is one of many things that are linked into Diabetes...

I have been diabetic for 14 years and still not really accepted it !!! I know that I am a diabetic but don't like it . Because I am a staff nurse people assume I know all about it and can look after myself regarding injections etc . I was put on insulin yesterday as well as a mixture of tablets . I hate it but know I have to take it in order to feel better . It's been a long while since I have felt well . I appear strong and carefree in front of my family , but deep down I still hate it !! Never mind ... Life goes on :)

Get me down, had the damm disease 30 years and I ain't got up yet !!!

Seriously yes my problem is the depression you get into and like other posts am in denial - I HAVE DIABETES - but Hey I am not a DIABETIC - has been my mantra for many years. You can kick out at it - you can deny it -you can even wallow in the self pity of the truth. But the ****** has got you and you have to dance to its tune, and with a little positive slant that dance ain't quite so bad as some - very repative and some may say boring but its got a kinda of beat - yes it gets on your nerves - if you have any nerves left working for it to get on, and yes it is a pain in so many ways both literally and metaphorically speaking.

Ashley you are eighteen love, make the ****** your friend not your enemy, you say your legs are scarred - they will heal over time, move your sites change needles each jab - do it- treat yourself to a pamper of spoiling yourself with a new needle way hay!!. I have been exactly where you are and kicked out but now i have my regrets on not follwoing the rules and the pay back of neuropathy and retinopathy.

 Look after yourself, keep going and take care.
