This is my experience as a T2 not on insulin.
I was always hungry, even after a roast dinner and dessert and snacks after that. I know how awful constant hunger is.
Around 4 years before I was diagnosed I noticed that eating carbs made me feel hungry. The more carbs I ate the hungrier I became. Around a year before I was diagnosed I learnt about insulin resistance and that carbs induced a release of insulin.
Like you I was diagnosed as T2 in 2011. If I have carbs I am hungrier than if I don't. I therefore believe that for me it's the insulin my own body produces that makes me feel hungry. So, yes, as a T2 on insulin it makes sense that part of the hunger you experience may be caused by the insulin. I wouldn't expect a T1 to have the same issues.
I agree that most people would be hungry on the small amount of food you have, and the hunger builds as the body craves nutrition. I feel for you as you are really battling on a few fronts and that's tough. All I would suggest is to try to eat good nutritious low carb food. Easy to say not easy to do in your situation. I was in Canada in June and I know how high the food prices are.
Re the leg cramps...I have a magnesium supplement which helps with those. I don't take it all the time, just for a few days if I get cramps.
Please don't let your BGs go sky high because you aren't using insulin. I would hate you to have even more problems to add to the list.
Hugs and best wishes.
