Does this sound like diabetes?

Hi everyone,
I've just joined here as I think I might have developed type 2 diabetes.
A bit of background: my eldest son was born with really low blood sugar and had to be in hospital for 5 weeks while the doctors helped bring them to normal. It was never suggested to me as I wasn't deemed to be in the "at risk" category but I decided after reading up on it after my son was born that I might have had undiagnosed gestational diabetes. When I was pregnant with my second son I insisted on being tested and was positive for gestational diabetes which I controlled by diet to start with and then metformin later on. My son was born without any problems.
I tested afterwards and blood sugar returned to normal.
My youngest is now 18 months old and the last few days I've been needing to pee at night time (Monday was about 4 times in the night but mainly 1-2 times). I'd not really thought anything of it until last night when I had a chocolate dessert and fell asleep within about 15 mins of eating it and then remembered that the same had happened a couple nights before after eating a cookie. Been having a dry mouth too.
I have some test strips from the gestational diabetes and still have the monitor so tested this morning and had a reading of 5.7. Is this high? I know for gestational diabetes o was meant to be below 5.3 but they did say the targets were different for gestational diabetes than for type 2 so thought I'd ask on here. TIA

. so no you don´t have diabetes, but you can maybe also prevent getting there in the future by changing into a low glychemic eating style or even the lower carb eating style...

here are some very great recipes both main meals and treats and lots of other delicious food kinds :

here is a scheme that tells you where you are considering diabetes, your number indicates you are in the normal area, note the green area is the normal level50shades - Copy.png

There is a lot of useful in formation on this site, as well as incredibly knowledgeable people on the forum.
For example,
- this: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html: gives you what BG ranges to expect and shows 5.7 is within target for non-diabetic.
- this: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-symptoms.html: describes the symptoms of diabetes of which, peeing is one.

When you have two young children, you are probably very busy which could explain why you have fallen asleep recently.
And peeing a lot may be the symptoms of multiple conditions.
If you are concerned, I recommend visiting a doctor.

Hi Kirsty,
The simplest thing to put your mind at rest is go see the Dr. Nobody here can tell you if you are or are not diabetic.

Your reading's are not high 5.7 would make it under 40mmol which is where my numbers are at and if you look at my avatar it says reversed diabetes.

If that helps put your mind at ease until you get your Dr's appointment. ;)

Ohhhh I'm completely stealing that table,

Because I have never self tested I am not au fait with the conversion tables and every body talks about different readings. I think I confuse myself sometimes;)

P.s side note miss spelt Au Fait as Ofay turns out that's a racist slur,
I had no idea my dyslexia was making me racist:(.

Hello and welcome @KirstyT32, your symptoms could indicate any number of things, the only way to put your mind at rest is to visit your GP and get this checked out - personally I wouldn't be too concerned with your blood glucose levels, they are fine but it's best to stay on the radar with your GP if you have concerns.

it could sound like you have a very unstable blood glucose with very high spikes of insuline right after eating high carb meals, well it doesn´t feel good, but it is common phenomenon in people being prediabetic before one get really diabetic... so no you don´t have diabetes, but you can maybe also prevent getting there in the future by changing into a low glychemic eating style or even the lower carb eating style...

Hi Freema - this doesn't sound unstable at all, for someone who may be concerned about developing diabetes but who isn't displaying high BG levels then please don't give out this information.

One fasting test of 5.7 only tells you that your bg was quite normal at that point of testing, and it tells you that at least you're not walking around with your numbers sky high all the time. It doesn't tell you how your body is dealing with carbs or if you have high bg for hours after eating.
Gestational diabetes is a strong risk factor of developing type2, and your symptoms could be a result of (pre-)diabetes, so I think you're right in trying to find out. Ask your GP for a blood test. Good luck!

I have taken the comment away ..., I was pointing at the feeling of extreme tiredness after eating a high carb treat

Thanks @Freema - Kirsty is mum to a young one, so tiredness wouldn't be uncommon, however it could be thyroid, iron levels etc etc, we really cannot diagnose so under the circumstances it's best that she get's checked out by the GP.
