Does this sound like diabetes?

I'm 21, and have a family history of diabetes (both grandparents, mother is pre-diabetic). I had a huge milkshake 2 days ago, and had an unquenchable thirst the whole day - I drank 9 litres of water and kept going to the toilet. I was drinking water so quickly that I started throwing up some as soon as I finished drinking it. I've also been waking up in the night to go which normally never happens to me. But I don't have the thirst today! Instead I have really bad pins and needles in my hands and legs/feet (to the point where I can't sit in one position for more than 2 minutes), and am very hungry...Have been tired constantly, sleeping 12-15 hours, napping during the day. Have also had thrush for 2 months, and had 3 boils/abscesses on my leg earlier this month. My urine also smells sweet recently. I normally don't eat carbs, but this week I meal-prepped lots of pasta and had that for lunch everyday - I think that might have brought on the sudden symptoms. I plan on going to the GP tomorrow, but just wondering - does this sound like diabetes? Thank you!

In a word YES but there are other things so you need to go the Dr urgently.

thank you so much! I plan on going tomorrow but don't have an appointment as this only happened over the weekend. For something like this, is it normally possible to get a finger prick test without an appointment or will I need to wait? Thank you xx

The test that you should ask for is the HbA1c, this test requires a blood draw from the arm. If the first test results in a Diabetes reading a second HbA1c is required to confirm diagnosis.

Speak to your GP, s/he will decide if your symptoms merit the test. Good Luck.

You can go to a pharmacy and have a blood prick test. Please do see your dr to though.

Yes, do see the GP urgently as it does sound that diabetes is likely. Most pharmacies will do an on the spot finger prick test which should show up any serious high blood sugar level; you could also buy a glucose meter and test yourself.

Hopefully you can get an emergency appointment to see your doctor on Monday. Do any of your diabetic relatives have testing equipment so that you can test your blood sugar and/or ketone levels? You need both of these tested since long term undiagnosed diabetics are at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is an emergency event requiring a trip to the A&E department at the hospital. If they won't see you on Monday please ring 111 and tell them all the symptoms in your first paragraph.

Good luck.

ps If you're still awake I'd recommend ringing 111 now.

Do let us know how you get on; we are a caring bunch and like to help where we can.

I am assuming you will be getting a blood test and/or a Dr's appointment today.?

Thank you, thats very kind of you. I got an emergency appointment this morning and my blood glucose level was normal at 4.3 (I had 1 banana for breakfast). My GP took a blood test for diabetes/kidney infection and I will find out the results tomorrow.

Im a bit confused now - does this mean I am in the clear for diabetes or is there still a possibility that I can be at risk?

You seem to be in the clear but one blood test is not definitive; my fasting was 18.6 when I was diagnosed! Let us know what your results are. Drs are not always good at getting their message across and I very often have to interpret friends horses lab results as their vets blind them with science.

In fact, I once tad to explain to my diabetic nurse what one of my results meant as she didn't know!!!!
