Does this sound like nerve damage ??

Hi ,

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just over 3 months ago . However for about a month now,( maybe before can’t remember) I’ve noticed minor random ‘twinges’ . It feels like a one off mild pink prick sensation , and it happens in small
Bouts almost .
it can be anywhere , from under my foot , to my thigh , to my arm , anywhere .
Adding to that , I’ve even had very brief momentary burning pain in my palm .

Right now for example I can feel the odd twinge in my palm, then my forearm , then my thigh etc

I mentioned this to the diabetes nurse and they said I would only get pain / damage after years of diabetes .

Does it sound like nerve damage to you ?? Could it have been caused in a few months or would it have been longer ( I know I’ve mentioned this before , about the possibility of me having LADA ) but maybe it could have was bbeen that , and for about 9 months since my normal HBA1c back in January 2020) it could have been undetected . Don’t know if LADA could develop on that time though .

Doesn't sound like diabetic nerve damage (neuropathy) to me.
From what I know, diabetic nerve damage actually damages specific nerves, whereafter those nerves (mostly in the feet) are damaged. It doesn't go around from place to place.
If you're worried about it, by all means mention it to your GP, but it doesn't sound at all like the specific nerve damage associated with diabetes.

With the obvious caveat that you'd better check with the doctor, and we can't say anything too specific, I'd definitely like to second Antje's point that it doesn't sound like neuropathy: mine was very much in the same spots- two numb toes on the right foot, pain in the soles of both feet, permanent pins and needles in the right thumb, and then hypersensitivity to touch in the left elbow and middle section of my left ring finger. Hope that eases a little worry: look after yourself!

Do you take statins?

Actually Mike has a point there too: my non-diabetic-but-elderly mother had all kinds of aches and twinges with statins, which then developed into her having trouble walking. I've taken statins myself without side-effects and I'm not anti-statin per se, but there's definitely issues to watch out for with them.

Peripheral neuropathy generally takes years of high blood sugars to develop. About 20% of people with type 1 diabetes have peripheral neuropathy after 20 years of diabetes.
