Does your blood glucose improve with diet and exercise?

I was diagnosed last September. Dr said probably type 2. I am not overweight and we have no history of diabetes in our family so one of the other Drs that I saw said this could be LADA. I have gone on a low carb diet and my HbA1c reading has changed from 85 to 46. Does this mean that it is type 2? Am I correct in assuming that diet and exercise would make no difference to LADA?

Hi happycat,

Welcome to the forum!

I was diagnosed as type 2 initially in December 2012 despite being healthy weight and only 26 years old, then after full bloods they changed my diagnosis to 1.5 (LADA) because I tested positive for GAD65 antibodies which destroy the insulin producing beta cells in the body. I would encourage you to ask your doctor about running the blood tests on u too if you are not overweight as it could be LADA and that is the best way of diagnosing. There is also no history in my family either of any type of diabetes.

With regard to the diet etc... It's true that in many cases it won't be enough for people with LADA but it depends upon how early you are into the auto immune response. I am currently controlling my BG with diet and Metformin and its being called the 'honeymoon' period and I have been told that, eventually, as more cells are destroyed, my BG will start to creep up regardless of my diet and tablets and that will be the time I need to switch to insulin.... So to answer your question, it is possible to control BG in LADA without insulin for a period of time and so it may be worth asking for those blood tests :-) hope this helps

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 23 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

Thank you for your reply Elaine 77. We have a lot of autoimmune problems in our family. I also have hypothyroidism and low platelets which I think is why the other doctor suggested LADA. I did not have any symptoms of diabetes and was diagnosed completely by chance when I went to my walk in clinic with very severe backpain. I will certainly follow your advice and ask if they can do another test. :)
