Don't understand

I was diagnosed Type 2, 3 years ago. I am now 53. Found out when I would not heal up from an orthopeadic op on my ankle.

In the last 12 months have got down to 15st 7 from 18st 10, with exercise.
Play 18 holes golf 4-5 times per week and walk dogs on hour per day 7 days a week

I now eat as follows:
Breakfast. 2 slices Granary Toast, Tin tomatoes and 2 slices grilled bacon. No sugar in any drinks at all
Lunch. Grilled Chicken, odd beef stew,(home made), green veg no potatoes.
Supper. Grilled Prawns, or plate smoked salmon, or bowl of clear soup, no bread.
Alcohol. Too much, 2 -3 pts lager an evening, or half bottle of wine an evening.
My last 3 HBAC1s have all been 6.1%. Cholesterol 4.1, BPs 118/55.
Was taking one Gliclazide 30mg PR a day and 1 500mg Metformin PR per day and 1 20mg Avorstatin.
Prior to this HBAc1s were 8% average, Cholesterol 5.2 and BP 118/55.

Am now instructed to cease Gliclazide and just take one metformin 500mg.
Have seen reports of people getting in the 5% club for HBAc1s and canot get there. Grrrr.
So have cut out gliclazide as instructed but take 1.5 500mg Metformin each day, as do not want to start creeping up again.
Last 5 days morning tests - no food for previous 10-12 hours have been as follows: (3 hours later after breakfast in brackets)
8.2 - (6.2), 8.6 - (3.7), 7.8 - (5.7), 6.9 - (4.5), 7.1- (5.9).
However, despite the low readings three hours after breakfast and two hours after walk, always feel worse, shakes, bad tempered, disorientated, immediately before Breakfast and feel fine two hours after, despite readings as low as 3.7 which I undertand is classified as a Hypo!
Similarly evening tests before supper have average 4-5, but feel fine. Am I taking too much Metformin, not eating enough, and why is it that after a light supper and 12 hours without food BS has crept up to nearly double the post meal readings?
It has annoyed me also that I was told by older members of my family that as a child I suffered from a condition called Ketone Acidosis, which apparently has some connection to Diabetes. All I remember was not being allowed sugar, or sweets or fats of almost any description, ie. no butter, cheese, milk or ice cream or such like, as a result of which I have never eaten much in the way of rich food since, never really liked it. However, I cannot find out the connection between the two conditions.

You may be a victim of the Dawn Phenomenon. That's where the body gets ready for the day, by releasing glucose into the blood from the liver. For me an evening snack of nuts helps with this.
I note also that you have been caught by the low fat belief
Fats are not an issue for a low carb diet. you can have cheese and butter if you don't eat starch with it. Ice-cream is another thing, it contains sugar. You can make your own with artificial sweeteners. there are recipes on the web.
If you want tto keep Blood glucose down to a minimum without medicine, you need to cut back on ALL starch.
For example I am a 5% er and don't eat bread at all, Not even wholemeal or German style whole grain bread. I can't have it without putting my BG up. I can cope with a few brands of cracker. Everyone has to find the right ones for themselves, but start by reading the panel on the pack for the carb count.

Henry.
Anything below 4 mmol/l is classed as a hypo or hypoglycaemic. What you are experiencing is the warning signs that you are going too low. Everybody, even a non Diabetic can get these symptoms. They are the bodys warning signals that something needs to be done, you need food perhaps, had too much exercise, a delayed meal, Stress or hot weather. If an Insulin user then it could also be too much injected.

If you don't get any of these symptoms then you are suffering from hypo unawareness. Not a good state to be in at all. My warning signs start at around 4.5 mmol/l because my awareness is good and I don't allow myself to drop into the hypo zone if I can help it ! Some people insist they never suffer from this condition, well that is truly remarkable, I am thoroughly amazed ! Still means they are hypo unaware though !

As for the Childhood Ketoacidosis here is a link to an informative article about the subject and it's link to Diabetes.
