Dose Adjustment Courses

I've just finished the dose adjustment course that the local diabetes care team run.
I have to say it was a revelation. I never realised that I didn't really know what I was doing.

Basically in summary you're counting/estimating the carbs you eat and matching the dose.
You work out how much 1 unit afects you blood glucose and use this to take adjustment doses.

It was really useful going through it with a group of other people at the same time.
I'd highly recommend it if it becomes available in your area.

Hi, i am new to this forum, i have just completed the course also and found ti extremely useful. I have been type 1 for 16 years and didnt realise that i was taking massive amounts of insulin when it wasnt needed. I definately recommend this to anyone who is diabetic should it be offered to you. I have never had better control!

I think it should be taught at diagnosis to people with type 1. if the patient is able to take it in at that time. if not then they should be informed about it and followed up after a few weeks. I think that the ongoing education in this country is pretty rubbish for most people.

i don't know about different areas but my clinic won't let me on the course (a MODY) so they would never let a type 2 on it. maybe different areas are more widely accepting.

The National criteria for the DAFNE is you must be a type 1 diabetic and be on a MDI insulin regermen. If you are a type 1's on insulin mixtures, you have to go onto MDI (Multi Dose Injections) before you can begin the course.

Type 2 diabetics go on the DESMOND (Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed) People classed as MODY seam to fall between the two courses.

Our group said that they thought it would be a good idea if you went on the course when you first got diagnosed but if you have been on the course youl understand what i mean when i say that it was confusing at times. When your newly diagnosed there is sooo many things that are changing in your life that going on this course would probabl;y make oyu feel confused and stressed. I found it beneficial as i have been type 1 diabetic for 16 years but i still felt a little confused at carbohydrate portions and everything else.......hope this helps

if you get the chance definately go on it though its changed my diabetes for the better.

Thanks
