The way diabetes gets reported in the media its all about obesity and type 2
I have type 1 diabetes, which is well controlled and my glucose levels are in the normal range, twice yearly HBA 1c is also low.

I have now been recommended to attend a 1 week full time DAFNE course to better understand the clinical side of diabetes and how food intake affects the bodies ability to manage calorific control, matched against insulin.

Has anyone else attended a DAFNE course recently and what are your views on the topics covered, the lectures and the overall experience.

Well I haven't attended one recently, I attended mine about 2 years ago but honestly it helps! And was a good course to go on! I enjoyed it! And there was a few things that I learnt that didn't know....and it felt like being back at school....I'm a bit of a geek ha!

I did a local version of DAFNE which is based around the DAFNE course.
It was very good.
Ours was split over 4 weeks with one day every week. It was very worth going along.

I did mine way back in January 2009, so no doubt the course has been refined much better now...............it did change things dramatically for me............I was completely in the dark with regards carb counting and MDI insulin regimes though so someone going in who as had the basics taught already and who has been on forums like this will not have such a dramatic effect as I did........

its very good though...............it trains you in to getting your bg, insulin dose and carb amounts down on paper so you can methodically work out how to adjust your insulin in order to get it fine tuned.......

your basal/background is the most critical dose though.........you want to get this as perfect as you can so that your bolus/quick acting doses are a little as they can be........

unfortunately for me there was little time to carry out proper basal testing as we were learning about the bolus adjustments and you could only change one dose at a time......

you will come away with something useful that's for sure..........I look forward to hearing your thoughts.........

Did mine around 4 years ago, have to say I learnt a lot despite living with type 1 diabetes for 29 years, particularly found the advice on exercising and the Sick Day Rules very useful.

It's not perfect by any means but I'm sure most people (no matter how long they have been diagnosed) will learn something new from the course, but it's great just to be sat in a room with other people and chat and share experiences of living with type 1...........if nothing else.

Thanks for your reply, I will post the outcome of my course, and how it worked for me when I have completed the course, (Ends Nov 8th)

Same here. It was good to get a weekly run down of ur food diary.

I would say the courses are worth while. Ppl on ours ranged from newbies (me) to ppl who've had diabetes 50 years +. We all found it useful :)

We were much the same in terms if the spread of people.

I attended my DAFNE course and graduated last week. I have to say the course was excellent.

Very informative and interesting. Team workshops learning about carbs and quantities. Working out ratios of different foods and meals has now meant that I can very easily work out the units of insulin needed to match carb intake.

We had a discussion with a Dr/Diabetic Consultant (Who also was a Type 1) he gave up nearly two hours to explain details about the immune system and how it affects diabetes and answered numerous question posed by the workshop members.

All in all, very good, very positive and extremely helpful. If anyone gets the opportunity to attend one, please go on it.

Thank you to all who took time out to respond the my initial query.

Pleased you enjoyed the course and found it extremely useful, even better having a consultant with type 1 themselves who can relate to everything that's being discussed.
